Weight

The BMW 530i aut. with a Bailey Unicorn Seville with an actual weight of 1350 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the BMW is in general very good. And also the weight of the Bailey with a User Payload (125 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is not too heavy, if the caravan is well loaded.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the BMW is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 76%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 85%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 159 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

PhilT reviewed a BMW 530i aut.:

"This review is based on the Bailey Pegasus II Genoa with the same bodyshell as the Seville but a 100kg lighter at max weight. For one reason or another I changed from a VW Passat 4Motion 130 Sport was towed pretty well, but after a long look for a replacement car we decided on the 04 BMW530i and this is a perfect match. The 6sp auto learns the extra weight of towing and adjusts its shift pattern to match. We have just towed over 100miles on a very blustery day and the outfit was steady throughout. The car does feel as though it would tow the 2000kg limit with ease. Where we did feel the pinch was in the pocket, plowing through the wind got us only 20mpg, but solo I can manage 37mpg on my commute. Yes the 530d might be more frugal and have more torque but do some maths on fuel costs over your annual mileage before you dismiss a petrol version."
