Weight

The Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI with a Eriba Touring Troll 552 GT with an actual weight of 1140 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Skoda is in general fairly good. And also the weight of the Eriba with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Skoda is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 71%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 82%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 187 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Garth Williams reviewed a Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI:

"We have towed the Swift Charisma 535 with our Octavia 1.9 estate for 3 years. This is a remarkably well matched outfit despite initial worries re perceived lack of engine power with the 105 bhp diesel engine, which are unfounded in practice. We have had no problems at all towing. Like another reviewer, we have towed up Birdlip Hill in 3rd gear (from a standing start on the roundabout) and can reach 50 mph by the top. Our car has cruise control and will maintain 60 mph on motorways on almost all hills in top (5th) gear. We obtain about 30-34 mpg depending on weather conditions, the Octavia being easily capable of 60+ mpg on a run when solo.We have caravanned all over England, to North and South Wales and Scotland with the Octavia and Swift. We have had no stability problems but do have an Al-ko stabiliser fitted. Note that later Octavias have a lower kerb weight - by about 200 kg - so that upgrading to the latest model will be a problem if we keep this caravan."
