Weight

The Mercedes-Benz ML 320 CDI with a Elddis Crusader Super Storm with an actual weight of 1870 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Mercedes-Benz is in general very good. But the weight of the Elddis with a User Payload (193 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy, but no problem if the caravan is well loaded and the driving speed is not too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Mercedes-Benz is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 78%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 85%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 100 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 138 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Melrose reviewed a Mercedes-Benz ML 320 CDI:

"This is a update on my last review on my ml 270 cdi 2001 manual-- I have now upgraded to a ML 320 cdi 06 reg, the 270 was a brill car owned it since sept 2008 till Jan 2016-- Then had a Grand Cherokee 2005 Nothing but trouble--Got rid-- then had a Vauxhall Antara 2 Ltr Auto No good for pulling the Bessacarr 550 GL at 1760 KG M.P.L.W--So Got the Ml 320 CDI-- This car is a cut above the 270 CDI Its a nicer drive and the Engine and Gearbox are fitted so well together, Pulls the Bessacarr easy and the fuel use is only 1 mpg a V6 3.Ltr Vs a 2.7 Ltr towing and the goodies in the 320 cdi make for a nice place to be, Local driving it returns 28.8 MPG, But I do put Millers in to clean the fuel system. I also change the oil and filter every 6 months the engine loves it, You will not own a better car as long as you look after it."
