Weight

The Chevrolet Captiva 2.0 VCD with a Swift Conqueror 630 with an actual weight of 1834 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Chevrolet is in general fairly good. But the weight of the Swift with a User Payload (160 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy. Proper and careful loading is essential and don't drive too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Chevrolet is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 87%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 97%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 90 - 100 kg.
  • Towball limit is 80 kg (Check this on the type plate of your towbar!)
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 122 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Craig Churm reviewed a Chevrolet Captiva 2.0 VCD:

"I swapped my old Kia Sedona Auto as it kept overheating the gearbox pulling the Bailey and thought I might be on the limit with the Captiva.
The Captiva tows very well. It is typical of a 4x4 in that changing lanes at speed can put a few butterflies into your stomach but the pulling power and traction are excellent. Fuel consumption isn\'t the best at around 38MPG solo but I can get 32MPG with the Bailey on the back if I\'m careful.
I purposely purchased the LS model without all the bells and whistles because the Climate Control can be a bit of a liability with both the Captiva and the Antara.
Other than a set of suspension drop links that went at 48000 miles and a track rod end that went at 50000 miles the car has been almost bulletproof.
With 3 children, grandparents and a Spaniel I needed a flexible 7 seater and I looked at the Sorrento/Santa Fe and the Nissan Pathfinder before choosing the Captiva because it fit my needs perfectly without the higher costs of the others. I do keep my towcars a long time as I drive a company car normally and the Captiva only goes out at weekends so I don\'t care too much about the depreciation and I picked it up cheap in the first place."
