Verdict

The Landrover Freelander - Td4 and the Coachman Amara 580 of a laden weight of 1550 kg is an excellent combination for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

Weight

There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.

Flat roads

The performances of the engine of this outfit are in general sufficient. Under all conditions on motorways it is possible to drive with 60 mph in the 5th gear. In that case the engine runs approximately 2400 rpm. In a headwind or for example on a crossover there is no need to downshift immediately.

Mountains

On most motorways inclines (1:20) driving is easily possible in the 3th gear with 50 mph and even full throttle with 55 mph. Hill starts are possible on steep slopes up to 16%. While driving the engine has enough power to drive on every normal road.

Attention: This car can easily drive much faster with the caravan than is safe. So always keep an eye on your speed!

The Landrover towing a Abbey Vogue 460 (1295) kg reviewed by jason:

Have to agree with all of the above, the td4 is a superb workhorse much better then I thought with good mpg returned 32 wish whilst traveling to southern France and as I have the sports set up you forget its there. Slight clutch smell whilst hitting them long steep hills in Limoges but no problems. Have to say other then my old Toyota gran via this beats all the rest which includes Renault Rx 4, merc cdi 220, and focus estate all of them struggled but no the freebi. And services are so easy and parts so cheap 5stars from me

The Landrover towing a Lunar Chateau 470 (1280) kg reviewed by Ady white:

My 2003 Freelander TD4 is more than a great match for my Lunar Chateau 470 Pulls with ease only problem is the state of the roads but sure to venture further away soon...
