Weight

  • The towing limit of the Dodge is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 70%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 76%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 85 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 176 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Geoff Mercer reviewed a Dodge Nitro 2.8 16v CRD 4WD aut.:

"I have had the Dodge Nitro 2.8L Turbo Auto SXD for around 4 years now, and it is for me the perfect tow car. It tows the Bailey Barcelona very well, and returns 24/27 mpg towing and around 30/38 mpg solo... I looked in detail at other tow cars within the 14K price range and the Nitro was far better than the Discoveries and KIA's considering purchase price and running costs. It will cruise along at 60 mph in cruise control, and this is the ideal speed to avoid trucks overtaking, and also the maximum allowed on motorways. There is slight "flick" if you get overtaken by a large vehicle, but this can be expected with the large air displacement of the overtaking vehicle. Superb on fields which are muddy and would easily pull a three ton elephant out of the mud...!! The Nitro is fully loaded with all the goodies you need - Sat Nav/Bluetooth/Heated seats/Auto 4 x 4 changeover/Trip computer/leather seats and lots of other electric goodies... I have other caravans but find the twin axle versions give more stability than the single ones... On its own, with seats folded down there is large cavernous space for all your transportation needs...Definitely recommend this tow car for caravanning and general use..."
