Weight

The Jaguar XF 2.7 V6 Diesel with a Swift Conqueror 640 with an actual weight of 1619 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Jaguar is in general very good. But the weight of the Swift with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy. Proper and careful loading is essential and don't drive too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Jaguar is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 81%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 91%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 - 90 kg.
  • Towball limit is 75 kg (Check this on the type plate of your towbar!)
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 130 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Clive Pett reviewed a Jaguar XF 2.7 V6 Diesel:

"Fully laden the Ace Globestar will exceed the 85% ratio but will still be less than our XF 2.7d's kerbweight. When I first hitched up I thought "blimey this is a long outfit" but the van follows the car very well. It's a big van and you need to be aware of the rear end swinging out when you take a tight turn. In terms of weight we stick to a 100kg max loading (50% of the legal payload) which is potentially a lot of stuff but that gives a perfect 85% ratio. The jag tows this big van like a dream, no effort or fuss and it will still out accelerate most lorries if you need to. The nose weight limit of 75kg is on the low side and careful loading is required to get it right, make sure the vans inboard water tank is Empty or you won't stand a chance! Invest in a noseweight gauge or you will almost certainly exceed the limit. Fuel economy is good averaging around 28 to 31mpg depending on the terrain, I have had 34mpg on the motorway. The Ace is a great van with fittings that are optional even on the latest vans, the island bed in its own room is a delight as is the seperate shower. The loo is a little on the small side but adequate. We mainly use it as a big two berth and it is a real home from home. I thoroughly recommend both the van and the car, together they are a little bit of magic! Look out for the giant Panda on the back!"
