Weight

The Ford Galaxy 2.2 TDCi with a Sterling Eccles Sport 586 with an actual weight of 1557 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Ford is in general very good. And also the weight of the Sterling with a User Payload (176 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is not too heavy, if the caravan is well loaded.

Performance

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Ford is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 76%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 85%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 85 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 150 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Martin reviewed a Ford Galaxy 2.2 TDCi:

"I have 2009 Galaxy 2.2 TDCI with 174 hp engine, The tow bar limit on Galaxy past 2009 is actually 90 kg not 80kg. We tow Sterling Eccles 586 which is fairly big van and find this car performing really well. There is a known issue with turbo lag but this is something that you getting used to when towing and does not make any troubles.
We already towed the van to South France through A75 and also to South Germany. Car performed really well doing up to 700km on a single tank. Average fuel consumption is around 9l/100km but gearing and rpm is really important. On our engine around 2200 rpm on 5th gear makes around 60 m/h and this seems to be most economical setup. When no wind and motorway is flat we could to 6th gear and 1850rpm having slightly better fuel consumption.
The only issue I found is a bit week clutch on reversing but pulling forward in my opinion this is one of the best value for money car on the market."
