Weight

The Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI with a Swift Charisma 570 with an actual weight of 1452 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Skoda is in general good. But the weight of the Swift with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy. Proper and careful loading is essential and don't drive too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Skoda is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 81%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 92%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 133 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

John reviewed a Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI:

"Caravaning since 2007 and have had a couple of tow cars in that period. Prvious car was BMW 530d touring. The Superb is very close to the BMW in terms of pulling power but I find it very important to have the nose weight correct for the Superb. The long tail end on the Superb makes the rear drop and front rise if the balance of weight is not correct. The BMW was self levelling, so no worries there. The Superb is very well equipped, with the Sat Nav stealing the show. Easy to use and simple to view on large screen or small screen between the dials. This small screen also displays your text messages, which is very handy. The Superbs rear leg room is massive. I have to young girls, so heavy items can be placed behind the front seats, which keeps the weight off the rear axle. One little problem that I have not yet solved is that the rear parking sensors are set off by the Alko Towball when the cover is on. Great economy even when towing, but the fuel tank seems small at 60 litres. Wifes little 1.4tdi Skoda has a much bigger tank. The car is well built and feels as expensive as the BMW but obviously cost a lot less. Don't buy a Passat or an A6 until you've tried this car. You wont be dissapointed "
