Weight

  • The towing limit of the BMW is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 69%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 77%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 85 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 178 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

G Hunter reviewed a BMW Gran Turismo 530d aut.:

"Purchased the sterling continental in April 2015 and towed with my Jaguar 3.0d XF. Whilst caravan was within the tow weight of the vehicle and the Jag had more than enough power I felt on occasions the caravan was wagging the tail of the car. Bought the BMW GT after researching for a more suitable car without having to move to a SUV. The extra qtr tonne of weight of the car has made all the difference. Coupled with the rear self levelling air suspension the combo is now solid as a rock. Pulling power same as Jag and achieving av 25-30 mpg. It\'s a big car being a half way house between the standard 5 series and the X5. A very practical and comfortable solution if you don\'t want a SUV. Have kept the Jag for my fun car!"
