Weight

The Audi A4 2.0 TDI with a Elddis Avante 564 with an actual weight of 1415 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Audi is in general good. But the weight of the Elddis with a User Payload (172 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy, but no problem if the caravan is well loaded and the driving speed is not too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Audi is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 79%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 91%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 142 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Daryl Phillips reviewed a Audi A4 2.0 TDI:

"Brand new to caravanning and already had a 2015 A4 model 2.0tdi 177 Quattro. Settled for an Elddis Avante 564 2012 and thanks to the review on this site I was confident in the outfit match.
My third time out using this outfit was a trip to Cornwall from the North East then back again via North Wales. These journeys saw me using two, three and four lane motorways, A and B class roads. In total around 1100 miles in a week. I have to say as a caravan mere novice this car and this van are perfectly matched.
I\'ve had only a small amount of clutch smell and that was when the sat nav directed me down a road I immediately saw was not caravan friendly. To get out I had to reverse out up a quite steep incline back onto the A road.
The stability of this outfit is fantastic running with an 80kg nose weight, so much so I easily built up the confidence to pass many an HGV (or slow moving car)
The car returned an MPG figure of 30mpg travelling to Cornwall and took it all in its stride. Whilst the match says 6th gear is not of much use I did find I slotted in to it to give the 5th cog a rest and to drop the revs for better MPG. On a whole I\'d wholly agree on the 4 1/2 stars for the match of this outfit "
