Advice with maximum weight

We do not recommend towing a caravan that is heavier than 1810 kg kg with this Mercedes-Benz.

In this advice we assume an average caravan with a weight of 1250 kg. Remember that the exact performance depends on the chosen caravan and that air resistance and dimensions have an influence.

Weight

The Mercedes-Benz E 300de with a Caravan as an example with an actual weight of 1250 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Mercedes-Benz is in general very good. If the hybrid battery is not completely empty. And also the weight of the Caravan with a User Payload (-360 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

A User Payload of -360 kg in the caravan is not realistic in practice.

Attention

The Mercedes-Benz is a hybrid car. The calculated performance depends on the amount of power available in the battery. The advice and performance are based on average use where there is still a small amount of power in the battery.

Also make a calculation of the Mercedes-Benz on the fuel engine only in case the battery is empty.

Actual Weights

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Mercedes-Benz is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 55%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 61%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 242 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Mike reviewed a Mercedes-Benz E 300de:

"Perfect match. Have driven 20000km with this setup. About 9l/100km. Car has air suspension on rear axle that adjusts to the load. Heavy battery under luggage compartment makes the car very stable even with caravan in tow.
Car is very cood at recouping braking energy in hilly terrain. Crossing the Kassel hills when going through Germany almost fills up the battery from empty :-)"
