Weight

The Opel Zafira 1.9 CDTi aut. with a Elddis Xplore 596 with an actual weight of 1498 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Opel is in general fairly good. But the weight of the Elddis with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy, but no problem if the caravan is well loaded and the driving speed is not too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Opel is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 80%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 90%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 133 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

User Reviews

Phil reviewed a Opel Zafira 1.9 CDTi aut.:

"I've found the Zafira to be a great towcar. Our caravan is very light (MTPLM 1178Kg) so acceleration is quite impressive. I only get 19-25mpg towing, but suspect this is due to our Bailey Ranger having a very "upright" front profile compared to the sloped fronts of other caravans.

The 6-speed auto gearbox is fantastic. It normally holds 5th gear at 60mph, so long as there is no head wind. It automatically changes down to provide engine braking on hills, and there is no clutch to burn out when reversing onto a pitch :-)

Stability is also very good. The Zafira has a short rear overhang, low profile tyres and "sporty" (i.e. hard!) suspension which all help. The van has an Alko 3004 stabiliser.

DON'T BE PUT OFF BY DEALERS SAYING THE ZAFIRA CAN'T TOW ANYTHING! I've heard this a few times and it seems to be based on the older & lighter Zafira "A" models.

According to our manual, the kerbweight of our Zafira is 1692Kg (1658kg for 150bhp auto + 16kg for "design" trim + 18kg for towing equipment). The optional spare wheel probably adds another 15kg too. The maximum braked towing weight is 1500kg (annoyingly this is NOT stated in the manual)

Negatives? Visibility from towing mirrors is poor if the drivers seat is moved forward, due to the door mirrors being close to the driver. I haven't tried wing mirrors. And given my choice again, I'd have the Vauxhall/Opel OEM detachable towbar fitted rather than the ugly (and ground clearance reducing) Witter detachable system."
