Weight

The Honda Jazz 1.4 with a Caravan leeg: 750 kg with an actual weight of 950 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Honda is in general just sufficient. And also the weight of the Caravan with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is good.

Actual Weights

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Honda is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 75%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 89%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 60 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 178 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is just sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Charlie T reviewed a Honda Jazz 1.4:

"I own a 2007 1.4 Honda Jazz Manual. I towed a fully laden (950kg) folding caravan tent around 150 miles each way. Acceleration was not great and hills were difficult at low speeds however it didn’t struggle on the motorways or back lanes. Great if you have a folding caravan tent or small hard top caravan that doesn’t exceed 1000kg fully laden. Would highly recommend checking rear suspension and potentially using rubber spring hardener rings to prevent excessive wear (especially if the suspension is original factory suspension).

Overall 4 out of 5 stars. Lack of power is the big killer"
