Weight

The Toyota Yaris 1.3 VVT-i with a Freedom Jetstream 1st Class with an actual weight of 750 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Toyota is in general sufficient. And also the weight of the Freedom with a User Payload (70 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Toyota is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 58%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 69%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 50 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 251 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Alistair Irvine reviewed a Toyota Yaris 1.3 VVT-i:

"The car does struggle uphill and speeds of 15-19mph are achieved in 2nd gear with "the pedal to the metal". At speeds >55mph it is prone to snaking or a little twitch, so I found out very fast speeds 50-55mph on the motorway are quite safe. Keep into the left as trucks and coachs pass on the motorway as they pose moments of concentration and just after they have overtaken as this seems to cause a bow wave of airflow.
On other roads it is quite fine.
I have driven several hundred miles with it and enjoy the journey. "
