The Landrover Freelander 1.8i with a Paardentrailer 1,5 paardstrailer with an actual weight of 1300 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Landrover is in general fairly good. And also the weight of the Paardentrailer with a User Payload (100 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is pretty good.

Performance

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Landrover is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 76%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 87%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 224 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Pru reviewed a Landrover Freelander 1.8i:

"Towed horse trailer (one 550KG horse on board) well with no issues on the flat. Higher RPM needed (around the 3k mark) for inclines otherwise an easy tow experience. I was comfortable towing this weight but I think it would struggle with anything heavier."
