Weight

The Volkswagen CrossTouran 1.9 TDI with a Abbey Aventura 320 with an actual weight of 1389 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Volkswagen is in general more than sufficient. And also the weight of the Abbey with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is not too heavy, if the caravan is well loaded.

Actual Weights

Performance

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Volkswagen is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 76%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 86%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 152 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is more than sufficient.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

craig parkinson reviewed a Volkswagen CrossTouran 1.9 TDI:

"First caravan i have towed with and first car. This combination would be great in holland, nice and flat, but come to the slightest hill and the touran just runs out of puff and you have to change down. For the size of the car it is seriously underpowered, i had a 2.0 touran before this and it would of suited this use.

reversing up any kind of gradient is a grind and i had smoke bellowing form the clutch as i tried top reverse it up a slight hill into the bay which we were to be sited. Having said that all round visability is good and once upto 50-50 in 5th it drags it along at a reasonable rate, and with a ALKO stabiliser on it doesnt move around until about 70- 75

personally i would say a taouran is a great tower but just needs a little something extra under the hood
