The Mercedes-Benz V 220 CDI with a Bailey Ranger 620/6 with an actual weight of 1481 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Mercedes-Benz is in general fairly good. And also the weight of the Bailey with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Mercedes-Benz is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 64%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 70%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 195 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

steve owens reviewed a Mercedes-Benz V 220 CDI:

"great match, very stable outfit, fuel consumption with van apprx 25-30mpg,brakes on towcar could be better solo so with van behind does need a good push on the pedal, however never gets hairy!pitching on bumpy roads was better controlled when the car had the original air suspension fitted, however due to a very expensive electrical fault in the system i reverted to std coil spring suspension, with new gas shocks,as i say not as good as the air but o.k."
