Weight

The Audi Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro aut. with a Swift Challenger 490 with an actual weight of 1550 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Audi is in general very good. And also the weight of the Swift with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is pretty good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Audi is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 71%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 79%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 85 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 171 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Andy Barnett reviewed a Audi Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro aut.:

"Audi A6 Allroad 3.0tdi 247hp

The Audi is probably the best car I've used when towing a Caravan, four wheel drive, traction control, plenty of torque and great air suspension take all the effort out of pulling nearly 2 tons behind you, no matter what the road conditions. At 70mph I return 24mpg, not bad for the engine size.

I hate to chug along behing the HGV's AT 58mph so I'm happy to tow at 70mph, remember the 60mph limit was brought in 50 years ago when some cars couldn't even manage 60mph towing a caravan, I think it's time we moved on!. I have towed trailers and Caravans for over 30 years and if the Caravan is loaded safely and maintained correctly there is no reason why 70mph is not safe, especially in the A6!"
