Weight

  • The towing limit of the Opel is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 65%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 72%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 203 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

John Collins reviewed a Opel Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 CDTi aut.:

"Having towed caravans now for over 20 years I find this car to be the best I've ever towed with.
We're now coming towards the end of our autumn tour from North Yorkshire to Cornwall via the Cotswolds, Dorset and Somerset. I read the tow car reviews before buying this car having previously towed with a 2.2L Honda CRV.
The best mpg I could achieve with the Honda was approx 25. I am now getting 30mpg+
The automatic gearbox is a joy on motorways and dual carriageways and has plenty of pulling power. The longer wheelbase makes it very stable.
Alright it's not a 4x4 and may struggle on wet grass, however the fuel economy and pulling experience is worth the compromise.
I feel that this car deserves much better press as a very competent tow car.
