Verdict

The Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDI [AWD] and the Swift Challenger 580 of a laden weight of 1500 kg is a combination just suitable for most journeys but also with some limitations.

Weight

The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.

Flat roads

The performances of the engine of this outfit are in general very good. Under all conditions on motorways it is possible to drive with 60 mph in the 5th gear. Faster is certainly not advisable! In that case the engine runs approximately 2300 rpm, this gives maybe more noise than usually accustomed In a headwind or for example on a crossover there is no need to downshift immediately.

Mountains

On most motorways inclines (1:20) driving is easily possible in the 4th gear with 50 mph and even full throttle with 64 mph. Hill starts are possible on steep slopes up to 22%. While driving the engine has enough power to drive on every normal road.

Attention: This car can easily drive much faster with the caravan than is safe. So always keep an eye on your speed!

Reviews

The Kia towing a Swift Challenger 580 (1500) kg reviewed by John:

Just completed a full year towing in the UK, France, Spain, and Holland. Outstanding car for towing comfortable and strong Used the AWD to good effect when rallying off road. Seen many competitors who just dont come close. Got all the toys for half the price, and the warrenty service has been true to is word, most impressed.

The Kia towing a Swift Conqueror 480 (1442) kg reviewed by Martin:

Great car for towing only down side rear springs are very soft on this model. Still get around thirty to the gal

The Kia towing a Bailey Unicorn III Vigo (1500) kg reviewed by Dave:

My van is above the 85% recommended but the Sportage pulls it no problem. Have never used it but it's nice to know the car has trailer control should I ever get into trouble.
