Weight

The Volkswagen Passat Variant 2.0 TDI BMT with a Hobby De Luxe 545 KMF with an actual weight of 1525 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Volkswagen is in general fairly good. But the weight of the Hobby with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy. Proper and careful loading is essential and don't drive too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Volkswagen is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 82%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 93%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 85 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 127 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

C Taylor reviewed a Volkswagen Passat Variant 2.0 TDI BMT:

"I was a little apprehensive when I ordered the Hobby 545kmf because it is a fairly big caravan and on paper the weight is quite close to the Passat's towing limit, but I needn't have worried.

The car takes everything in it's stride comfortably cruising along in 6th gear on the cruise control at 60mph and still enough remaining power to accelerate above 60mph if needed without the need to change down.

On motorway inclines, 6th gear is still possible, but steeper inclines, it is necessary to change down to 5th or even 4th gear, but 60mph is still attainable in 4th gear, so not a problem.

An average of 30mpg was obtained on our last trip to southern Holland, which we were pleased with. (Fairly flat motorways)

The Winterhoff Hitchcock keeps everything stable, just the usual slight pull if passed by a heavy goods vehicle.

Just had to get used to the extra width of the outfit as the 545kmf is 2.5m wide instead of the typical 2.3m UK vans. Extra long towing mirrors required. All in all, very happy."
