Weight

The Renault Clio 1.5 dCi with a Freedom Jetstream Prima with an actual weight of 780 kg is a match suitable for most journeys, sometimes with some limitations.

The motor preformance of the Renault is in general just sufficient. And also the weight of the Freedom with a User Payload (130 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Renault is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 62%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 74%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 50 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 230 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is just sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Mike Lander reviewed a Renault Clio 1.5 dCi:

"The Clio 65bhp DCI is a very capable and stable towcar in combination with our Freedom Jeststream. Good low-end torque from this engine enables smooth starts. On the flat it tows well in 5th gear. However, lack of power is a problem when driving against the wind or uphill when it is difficult to maintain the legal limit of 60mph."
