Verdict

The Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCi [2WD] and the Lunar Quasar 554 of a laden weight of 1360 kg is an excellent combination for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

Weight

There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.

Flat roads

The performances of the engine of this outfit are in general very good. Under all conditions on motorways it is possible to drive with 60 mph in the 5th gear. In that case the engine runs approximately 2100 rpm. In a headwind or for example on a crossover there is no need to downshift immediately.

Mountains

On most motorways inclines (1:20) driving is easily possible in the 4th gear with 50 mph and even full throttle with 69 mph. Hill starts are possible on steep slopes up to 24%. While driving the engine has enough power to drive on every normal road.

Attention: This car can easily drive much faster with the caravan than is safe. So always keep an eye on your speed!

Reviews

The Ford towing a Lunar Quasar 554 (1360) kg reviewed by stuart everitt:

First time I have ever bought the same car twice in 36 years towing. The first was the best towcar I've had and the second one is every bit as good. It's easy to forget that there's a caravan behind you!

The Ford towing a Bailey Olympus 504 (1424) kg reviewed by COLIN HIRD:

We own a 2015 Kuga 150hp fwd and have owned it for 5 months now. We live North of the Lake District and inevitably if we head north or south we have some serious hills to climb on the M6 or A74M. Wherever we have towed the outfit has been completely stable with no issues at all. Even towing through the Lakes on the M6 going over Shap summit at over 1000ft the Kuga towed impeccably in 6th gear on cruise control. MPG wise we manage 25-26 over the hills and 30mpg on the flats. This is better than than our previous towcar a Freelander 2 which was great for towing but solo averaged 32-34 mpg unless on a run and driving like a saint. With an economical driving style the Kuga averages between 45-47 mpg.
