Verdict

The Volvo V60 CC D4 AWD aut. and the Caravan as an example of a laden weight of 1450 kg is an excellent combination for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

Weight

There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.

Flat roads

The performances of the engine of this outfit are in general very good. Under all conditions on motorways it is possible to drive with 60 mph in the 6th gear. In that case the engine runs approximately 1900 rpm. Maybe the engine is not running smoothly at low revs so it is better to shiftdown to the 5th gear, the engine runs in that case 2300 rpm (witch is maybe more noisily than usually accustomed). In a headwind or for example on a crossover there is no need to downshift immediately.

Mountains

On most motorways inclines (1:20) driving is easily possible in the 6th gear with 50 mph and even full throttle with 53 mph but maybe the engine is running better by somewhat more revs in the 5th gear). In the 4th gear the top speed is 73 mph (3864 rpm). Hill starts are possible on steep slopes, theoretical up to 55%, if the wheels have sufficient traction. Because the car does not have enough power at low revs, we recommend a gradient of more than 47% not to drive.

Attention: This car can easily drive much faster with the caravan than is safe. So always keep an eye on your speed!

Reviews

The Volvo towing a Lunar Quasar 674 (1530) kg reviewed by Jim w:

Had car and van out last week. This is first time I had towed with the Volvo. Been towing for 20 years. Last 4 cars have all been sskoda superb auto. Great tow cars but have to say the Volvo V60 cc auto with AWD is best towcar I have ever driven. It is great even in the snow. Performed without a problem. Had to park on unsalted snow covered hill as I was taking van into storage and it picked away without any trouble at all. No slipping or anything. Last time with Superb, I had to get tractor to take van in as I got stuck in snow. Boot is a bit small but I can certainly live with that in what is a great tow-car. All in all, I am really pleased with the Volvo and hope to Make good use of it to enjoy my retirement.
