Weight

The Toyota Previa 2.0 D4-D with a Lunar Lexon 575 EB with an actual weight of 1410 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Toyota is in general more than sufficient. And also the weight of the Lunar with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Toyota is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 68%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 75%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 70 - 80 kg.
  • Towball limit is 65 kg (Check this on the type plate of your towbar!)
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 188 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is more than sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

"I'm towing a Hobby prestige 560 UFe with a 2005 2.0 D4d T2. tows fine but could do with a little bit more power , still gives reasionable fuel consumption if you take it sensable it will still turn in 30mpg."
