i have mercedes r class 350 best tow car we love it evey year we gosouth france and it never lets us down
I am writing this review about my trip around Spain in 2015
Each year I buy a big tug to take me and my twin axle caravan on a 14,000 mile journey from the UK, through France and around Spain for a few months before heading back again.
The R Class 3 litre auto was certainly not a vehicle I had ever heard of, let alone contemplated for my annual trip south. It was the long wheel base version, and its.... very long indeed! Over 5 metres in fact. Loads of room inside with the 2 rear rows of seats folded flat.
Its also quite wide so for the first time I didn\'t feel the need to put towing mirrors on having pretty much a perfect view either side of the van.
Driving solo was fine, as was being hitched up toodling down the motorways at 60mph.
The car actually had quite a lot of power from the 3 litre V6 and would have been happy going faster if it was allowed.
I managed to crack the windscreen which cost nearly £600 to replace!!
Fuel economy was not too bad, actually managed to get close to 31 mpg towing on one occasion though typically it was closer to 28 mpg.
The air suspension was very good at keeping things straight and level, though the noseweight limit of 80kg was a bit low for a twin axle.
I would definitely buy another R Class if one became available when I needed it.
The Merc R class towing a Coachman Amara 1585kg . Pulls superbly. You really don't know it's on the back. 21 to 24 mpg . Laps up the miles with comfort and ease. This car goes under the radar and it really shouldn't !
Very good combination. The R class pulls with ease and comfort. With cruise control set you can forget you have a van behind you.Even slowing down is smooth and effortless.
