Weight

  • The towing limit of the Citroen is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 50%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 57%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 60 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 273 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Wilco reviewed a Citroen C5 2.2 HDI [5MT]:

"We are now on our second 2.2HDi C5 (our son has the first one). It is a good tow car. Our small TEC Travelbird (about 850kgs laden) is no problem at all, except with strong headwinds (as noted by another reviewer). Although the TEC is short it is taller and wider than most UK caravans. We have also towed a 1,300kg caravan with no problems.

Another reviewer mentioned diesel particulate filter (DPF) problems - we are about to have these filters removed from the cars and the ECU remapped to ignore them. This is a permanent solution to the DPF filter/fluid replacement which seems so problemmatical with older C5s. It will also increase BHP and torque by 10%. "
