Weight

The Opel Frontera 3.2 aut. with a Swift Challenger 530 with an actual weight of 1558 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Opel is in general good. And also the weight of the Swift with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is not too heavy, if the caravan is well loaded. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Opel is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 75%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 83%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 85 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 145 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is good.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Malcolm Garda reviewed a Opel Frontera 3.2 aut.:

"Vauxhall/Opel Frontera Nov 2003 (3.2i V6 24v Auto 202HP) towing a Bailey Senator MONTANA (2001 Twin Axle) 1261KG with 323KG payload = 1584KG. I have been towing with this rig - effortless - also have 50KG's in a large (580L) Karite roof box and 25KG's on a Pendle bike rack. No probs towing in 'D' however I shitf to '3' for up-hill. No overheating - up-hill temp hovers a hair over half way on the needle (90 C?) but one quarter in normal driving (80 C). Have had original gearbox oil cooler disconnected and larger one fitted (£90 tot) in front of all rads. have had supplementary fan (only 9" £25) fitted to front n/s of air-con rad so that in traffic more air passes through this one for comfort in the car. No additional engine cooling was fitted as the std viscous coupling seems to do pretty well even when 30deg C outside! Av 19mpg over 500mile stretch. Best tow car I've ever had - wipes the floor with my GC Jeep of the same age!"
