The towing limit is exceeded by 175 kg!
It is not allowed to drive with this Compass.
Make sure the towing limit is correct.

We now give advice based on the assumption that the legal maximum towing weight is higher for your car and that the car should be allowed to tow this caravan!

The Opel Zafira 1.9 CDTi with a Compass Omega 524 L with an actual weight of 1475 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Opel is in general more than sufficient. But the weight of the Compass with a User Payload (193 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is quite heavy, but no problem if the caravan is well loaded and the driving speed is not too fast. Remember to load your caravan correctly, insuring that the noseweight of the caravan is sufficient and the weight is distributed properly!

Weight

  • The towing limit is exceeded by 175 kg (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 80%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 90%.
  • The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving exist. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has knowledge of and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is recommended.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 135 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is more than sufficient.
  • Proper and careful loading is still important!
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Andy reviewed a Opel Zafira 1.9 CDTi:

"What ever you do, do not tow with a Zafira, I had it from new and has done 106000, and thats all it will be doing as its now scrap. This car like other Vauxhalss had been fitted with the M32 gearbox, which has over 25 variants, just shows how long it took vauxhalll to get one to work properly. the bearings in the box have melted, the duel mass flywheel has also gone, leaving me with a bill of over 2K, it isn't woth much more than that even though it is a 2007 1.9 cdt1 120bhp. I loved this car, now I'm carless and about to become skint in trying to find another motor that wont go bang when towing, a light caravan too I might add. Gutted.....
You have been warned, DONT TOW WITH A ZAFIRA!"
