The Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6i 16v with a Sterckeman Starlett 420 CP with an actual weight of 970 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Citroen is in general more than sufficient. And also the weight of the Sterckeman with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Citroen is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 63%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 72%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 65 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 217 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is more than sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Bob Watson reviewed a Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6i 16v:

"Pulled a 515-4 nearest i could get on list
Went from Aberdeen to York - ok at 55-55 unstable at 65
got about 21mpg, hard slog up th A1 but as a first time ok, have chage to a 2lHDCI mondeo and Bailey Indiana this year, should feel different, also told by local caravan van dealer with new computer system, that the Picasso is only capable of 900kg, which is different from book, would like to thiink what it was doing to engine and did struggle of steep inclines at traffic lights"
