Actual Weights

Performance

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Mercedes-Benz is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, a B driving license is enough.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 11%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 12%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 50 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 348 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is more than sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Dogan reviewed a Mercedes-Benz E Combi 300 D aut. [W124]:

"My merc. is an 1991 AT 300d estate (113 bhp) and been towing for 4 years with it.

It returns a very stable outfit. High mass of car, high towbar loading limit(85 kg) and self levelling allows comfortable drive at 90-100 km/h witout stabiliser.

Power is not superior but satisfactory. The first gear is very good at hill starts. Consumption on tow is around 13 lt/100 km.

Overheating never happened but always an issue to check for these models. Changing radiator works well. When hot summers and steep hills come together you should not only turn off the AC but also give a go to cabin heating for safety.

"Reliable towing" is best to describe how this w124 diesel works."
