Weight

The Landrover Discovery Td5 aut. with a Coachman Amara 500 with an actual weight of 1400 kg is in general a good match and suitable for journeys on most kinds of roads, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

The motor preformance of the Landrover is in general more than sufficient. And also the weight of the Coachman with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is very good.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Landrover is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 57%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 62%.
  • The chance of snaking is small even at higher speeds.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 kg.
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 227 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is more than sufficient.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations in the mountains.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

John reviewed a Landrover Discovery Td5 aut.:

"I've towed with the following.
Discovery 3.9 auto
Discovery 3.9 manual
Discovery td5
Caravan was twin axle Swift at about 1870 kgs loaded.
Without a doubt all the land rovers were useless as tow cars, the V8s lacked torque and derv lacked power all were unreliable and very expensive to service and repair.
I now use a Ssangyong 270 ex. For towing it's very stable economical and totally reliable. Its Mercedes mechanicals are exceptional..Keep landrovers I'll never have another."
