Verdict

The Landrover Freelander Td4 aut. and the Hobby Prestige 650 UMFe of a laden weight of 1800 kg is a combination just suitable for most journeys but also with some limitations.

Weight

The risk of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving is great. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are so great that it could be dangerous. Only if the driver has a lot of knowledge and experience in driving a caravan it should be safe to drive slowly. Proper and careful loading is essential! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is definitely recommended.

Flat roads

The performances of the engine of this outfit are in general more than sufficient. Under favourable conditions on motorways it is possible to drive with 60 mph in the 5th gear, by giving the engine plenty of throttle. Faster is certainly not advisable! In that case the engine runs approximately 2200 rpm. For example, in a headwind or a crossover, downshift to the 4th gear. The engine runs approximately 3000 rpm (witch is maybe more noisily than usually accustomed).

Mountains

On most motorways inclines (1:20) it is barely possible to drive in the 3th gear with 50 mph up hill. Hill starts are possible on steep slopes, theoretical up to 31%, if the wheels have sufficient traction. Because the car does not have enough power at low revs, we recommend a gradient of more than 24% not to drive.

Attention: This car can easily drive much faster with the caravan than is safe. So always keep an eye on your speed!

Reviews

The Landrover towing a Hobby Prestige 650 UMFe (1800) kg reviewed by Jannr:

Caravan max laden weight 1900kg, with ALDE liquid cirqulation heating system and nordic/winter options. Stability with Winterhoff crimp towing head and bogie/tandem axle caravan chassis is surprisingly good. No problem to keep on cruising speed 85km/h on highways and motorways. Overtaking lorries, trucks and buses making no effort. Heavy sidewind makes to feel it, not starting outfit snaking.
Automatic transmission keeps on 5th gear on flat and small climbs. Smaller than 4th gear has not been necessary to use in quite steep hills of Southern Savonia area (Mikkeli). 70km/h speed is applicable in these conditions.
4wd with ATV tires are very helpful on gravel roads climbs, as well as wet grass camping areas.

i have a 2004 td4 auto sport, which is chipped to 145bhp, and it tows the spectrum 620 with ease. i am an experianced towing driver (lgv 1) and although the outfit is on 99%, iv had no problems whatsoever, up hill and down dale
