Weight

The Citroen Jumpy 1.6 Hdi with a Swift Challenger 560 with an actual weight of 1518 kg is a match suitable for most journeys, sometimes with some limitations.

The motor preformance of the Citroen is in general moderate but for your use maybe sufficient. The weight of the Swift with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), kgis not too heavy, if the caravan is well loaded.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Citroen is sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • The caravan is too heavily loaded.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 77%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 87%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 - 85 kg.
  • Towball limit is 70 kg (Check this on the type plate of your towbar!)
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 147 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is moderate but for your use maybe sufficient.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a good match, sometimes with some limitations.

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

John reviewed a Citroen Jumpy 1.6 Hdi:

"The 1.6hdi Dispatch tows my Swift Challenger comfortably. It does require good gear shift control on the steeper inclines. Has great stopping ability and keeps the caravan in a straight line. Stability and towing comfort seems to be better with more weight on towball rather than less, so good loading of caravan essential. Better to have passengers in front of van for better traction. "
