Weight

The Ford Galaxy 2.0 TDCi aut. with a Bailey Senator California with an actual weight of 1459 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Ford is in general fairly good. And also the weight of the Bailey with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is not too heavy, if the caravan is well loaded.

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Ford is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 76%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 84%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 80 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 56 mph (90 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 152 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is fairly good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Jonty reviewed a Ford Galaxy 2.0 TDCi aut.:

"Probably one of the best outfits I have owned, the Galaxy makes good progress, flat, hill, very steep hill, I have used this all over the UK and never felt in a position I was not comfortable with.

I did have a dedicated tow bar / electrics kit and had the car programmed to adapt the vehicle stability etc. when the caravan was hitched, the caravan also has ATC and although the odd wobble in high winds with large vehicles passing the outfit took it all in its stride.

The car is now 5 years old and it did give some difficulty with the gearbox, this required a new box to be fitted at 41,000 miles, which was a bit of a shock, but given the overall drive and handling either solo or with the van hitched I am looking at another Galaxy.

Fuel economy on the Galaxy was between 38 mpg around town and 48 mpg on a steady run, using cruise control even when towing without difficulty. Towing the van returned on average between 28 and 32 mpg which I feel was acceptable given the loading.

The one thing I will say is that when fitting the tow bar and electrics be sure you have a dedicated kit rather than a relay kit, this gives the reassurance of the car handling software adjusting once hitched, this takes account of the van loading on the vehicle. I let the Ford dealer fit the first but despite asking for a dedicated kit they fitted a cheaper relay kit, which I insisted was changed to the one I requested.

Would I recommend this combination, yes without hesitation, I will report on the \"All New\" Ford Galaxy once it arrives and I tow with it.

Happy touring!"
