Weight

  • The towing limit of the BMW is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 64%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 71%.
  • The chance of snaking is relatively small at normal speed, if the caravan is well loaded.
  • Recommended noseweight is 75 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 201 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • Safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

User Reviews

Rob Cranswick reviewed a BMW Touring 530d aut.:

"I tow a Lunar Eclipse 19/4 (Quasar 544 Wanderhome derivative) 1350kg with BMW 530d Auto Touring. Using the Towcar matching 'form' if you make sure the caravan payload correctly states 175kg, and for me increase the car payload to 200kg which is more realistic, the result is a Perfect Match.
And that's exactly what it is, a perfect match. The van never moves or twitches event in high winds, storm ( and tempest) so it is perfect.
My only problem is getting the caravan nose weight down to 90kg. The van is naturally nose heavy, and I have to trim just behind the axle to get it right. It is not easy getting it right without over balancing the payload.
I would prefer to have a car noseweight of 100kg which will give some headroom when loading the van, but it does not detract from the good combination. "
