The Landrover Freelander 2.2 SD4 aut. with a Swift Challenger 560 with an actual weight of 1518 kg is in general a good match and suitable for all journeys on all kinds of roads.

The motor preformance of the Landrover is in general very good. And also the weight of the Swift with a normally distributed User Payload (200 kg in the caravan and 200 kg in the car including passengers), is pretty good.

Performance

Weight

  • The towing limit of the Landrover is more than sufficient (check this in your vehicle documents).
  • If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you will need a B+E (or B96) driving license.
  • The caravan is too heavily loaded.
  • Weight ratio between the laden caravan and the loaded car is 72%. Common in the UK: the weight ratio between the laden caravan and the kerbweight of the car is 81%.
  • There is a small chance of snaking at higher speeds, strong side winds and thoughtless driving. Even if the combination normally feels stable, the forces by deflection side to side are great at high speed. For drivers with knowledge of, and experience in driving a caravan it is safe to drive, but proper and careful loading is still important! An electronic stability system in the car and / or on the caravan is worth considering.
  • Recommended noseweight is 85 kg.
  • Safe speed up to 62 mph (100 km/h).
  • Stability and safety score to compare is 167 points.

If the caravan starts to snake you should reduce your speed and slow down directly! Lift your feet off the accelerator and brake gradually. Hold the steering wheel into a fixed position.

Conclusion

  • Performance is very good.
  • If the caravan is well loaded safe driving is possible.
  • It's a perfect match!

Influence of User Payload on stability

Weight distribution and noseweight are vital in obtaining a stable caravan.

Distribute the User Payload by yourself in the caravan and the car and then find out the stability rating of your loading configuration.

"excellent tow vehicle pulled up outside lane beside range rover sport with outfit at traffic lights when they changed we both floored it freelander 2 spun front wheels few second haldex and traction control cut in and we passed R R Sport the only difference between these two Land Rover models is newer RR sport has two litre and freelander 2 has two point two litre engine
if buying the smaller Land Rover range - Freelander 2 Range Rover or Discover sport 2014 if have tow bar done 75,000 miles check for gear box clunk as have a coupling between gearbox and transfer box was manufactured with a to softer metal splined coupling usually need changing .
After We purchased our 2014 45000 mile Freelander 2 we had Freelander Specialist do there transfer box and diffs removal and flush as they have NO DRAIN PLUGS they found coupling was nearly warn out as had been used as a tow car they have a specialist machine and harden a new modified coupler Freelander Specialists are near Munford Norfolk 60 miles away was well worth the trip, Rev Trevor
