Generally I prefer using cars rather than SUV type vehicles even through I have had RR, X5, X6 etc....
My previous tow car was a BMW 2016 740Ld which was an excellent choice and 36mpg was achievable on a good run with a 22kg Vanmaster hooked up. This A8 again is an excellent choice, still with the Vanmaster hooked up but due to the extra power only 32mpg on a long run. The last X5 M50 I had was also very good but mpg was only @26 at best but still an excellent choice. Tip for X5 etc... always spec the comfort seats option.
Great car to tow with. With this outfit on long motorway drives I normally average 30mpg the car has more than enough power to waft along with ease. Having the air suspension on the car so it will make sure everything is nice and level. Great four wheel drive I've been able to get across muddy fields with my caravan where Mitsubishi shoguns have got stuck. The car is able to accelerate quickly with the caravan on meaning no problems when coming out of short service slip roads. All in all I would really recommend the Audi A8 as a tow car only thing that lets it down is repair bills can be rather high ( everything is electric)
Whilst it may loose out on the last 5% of stability compared to my previous Touareg, it is still vastly more stable than either my old Range Rover or Discovery.
The thing that really stands out thogh is the torque: There is so much pulling power that it will pull up pretty much any incline at less than 2000rpm in 6th gear. This flexability allows frequent use of cruise control making for an even more relaxed towing experience.
The final coupe-de-grace is an easy 23mpg with the van behind! Awesome!!
