I've towed quite a few caravans and trailers with my 2.0 petrol and found it to be very capable
I've never had an issue with towing. I've had two berth caravans but my friend borrowed my Mondeo to tow a six berth. He said it was fine and didn't have an issue
I've towed a large trailer piled high with wood, pallets etc with no issues
My Mondeo is now 19 years old and still running well
Can't fault it
Not recommended. It was dangerous above 70kph, snaking been the big problem. The Powershift transmission is not up to the task and repairs will cost you more than the value of the car
Excellent towcar, I had a lunar clubman SI first on a single axle. Towed very well, but the new swift 645 high style on a twin axle tows even better. Went to Cromer on holiday for 2 weeks with very Heavy caravan at 1650KG as my son was joining us for a week with our 3 grandchildren. Towed the 135 Miles on a mixture of A & B road.
Its on the limit that's true but used responsibly and properly loaded our modeo does the job nicely.
6th gear is fine except for the grades down in cornwall and 30mpg+ with 4 people and a roofbox can't be bad.
We fitted a mover to save the clutch while moving the van on site (my one constant gripe being the too tall first gear) and at home and I will admit hill starts and traction are important on my route planning but otherwise its great.
I am a long time hgv driver and have been caravanning for 20years so I can say I know what I'm doing, I still recall initially towing my Eccles Amythist now THAT was a nasty van to tow.
I have been driving this combination for the past nine years. It copes with all conditions and averages 30mpg towing. 50 solo on a long journey,
on my fifth mondeo estate 1 mk1,2 mk2s all petrol and on my second tdci estate in the s version,,what a cracker ,these pull like trains and make light work of a 1497kg caravan with motor movers fitted, the only problem i have is pulling off when the road is wet i get a lot of wheelspin if i apply normal revs but i now have installed it into my brain to just a little revs when wet then steady build up as they will still wheelspin on a wet road at 40mph when towing, these cars also have a huge rear space to carry a lot,we carry an 85kg mobility scooter and dogs,we have tried other towing vehicles but still come back to the mondeo estate.
This match check has some mis-information as the towball nose weight stated in my Ford Mondeo hand is 90 kg. This check is quoting 75 kg as the limit. I think this information should be corrected on the site database. The revs quoted in this list are totally incorrect. I regularly travel at 55-60 mph in 6th gear with an actual rev counter reading of 1700rpm whilst towing my Coachman VIP 545. My mondeo returns an average of 43.00mpg.
i have towed a 1992 sprte major supper for over ten years with the above car the original clutch lasted for 101 thousand miles and was changed in november 2015 the car is a 2001 model . my friend had a landrover discovery and changed to a mondeo they told me that it tows better than the landrover and uses less fuel, i am happy and confident with my combination, till now my car has done 102 thousand miles and my caravan has done about 25 thousand miles since new and is still in great condition.hope that new models will give the same service
Towed my van from North Yorkshire to Europe Via Dover, Had no problems whatsoever, stayed well within reccomended speeds of between 50 and 60mph, just make sure the van is loaded correctly, most of my gear i take is loaded into car and not van making the car heavier, onway there i was getting around 35mpg but on way back that dropped to around 28mpg, i put this down to the fact i loaded car up with a few crates of beer
Excellent stability, although the weights are different due to my car being just over 1700kgs, I was disappointed with the towing economy, solo is excellent always around 51ish mpg but towing was down to 25.8mpg, I had hoped for better
I have towed my Lunar Quasar 462 to Slovenia, Croatia, southern France and Italy in the last 4 years. Each holiday covering 4 k miles. Provided you don't labour the engine when starting off, it tows beautifully both from the point of view of speed/ acceleration and stability.
my mondeo is a great towing car loads of power.
Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI, Towing a lunar lexon FB,I went to Aberdeen, through a lot of little towns en route, we still managed to acheive an amazing 35.8 mpg, some cars wont even give you that without towing a van
WE have a 2002 Mondeo estate 2.0 TDDI, this car tows our unit like a dream you don't even know you are towing it! Economy is brilliant, tons of power, our caravan is a lightweight older (abbey piper ) van , laden still doesn't exceed 850kg (as we went to a weighbridge) so even this review isn't totally accurate as we'd get even better results. I don't know why more people don't consider this car as a caravan workhorse, cheap to pick up all in all a brilliant car.
I have towed the Alpine 4 for one season in UK and in Europe. First class match. Returns 34 in mixed driving and 30 on motorways.
Very good tow car, eats hills no problem. Fuel consumption very good. Use normal gears not cruise control. Saros Clubman SI good matchrovided it is not overloaded.
excellent for towing our pegasus verona. plenty of power and no trouble on inclines or steeper hills. Moving off on a steep incline in the wet you need to be prepared for a bit of wheel spin if you apply the revs too quickly, but would thoroughly recommend as a good tow vehicle
I tow a 2 birth Bailey Unicorn Seville Maximum Weight 1433Kg. My 2011 Ford Mondeo Estate is the 2.0 Tdci, 163 bhp, with an automatic power shift gearbox. The Mondeo tows the Caravan effortlessly. This is the best tow car I have ever owned. It would be easy to forget that you are towing a caravan behind the car. The power of the car is more than enough to accelerate comfortably and you never have to slow down on motorway or dual-carriageway hills. It is also very stable, crosswinds and overtaking lorries do not affect stability. There is also a huge amount of storage space in the Mondeo. I would definitely recommend the Mondeo estate 2.0tdci as a great tow car.
Absolutely superb towing capability this car has! Bags of grunt and torque for towing. I towed with the 2.0l equivelant and that was pretty good too. Mine is a 55 reg 2.2 tdci Titanium X with 110k on the clock now so getting on a bit, and we've just taken our heavily laden 2004 Bailey Ranger 500\5 from Manchester to Somerset for a week. The car didn't miss a beat, or slow down on any of the steep hills. I tend to leave it in 5th gear and use cruise control to stick to just above 60 on the speedo to make good progress and not hold anyone up. Take-up from standstill, mid-range acceleration and cruising are effortless.
Towing Ace Jubilee Statesman caravan with 2006 2.0l tdci mondeo all around Wales,Devon and Cornwall for last 2 years with no problems at all a perfect match.
We,ve had a 2008 Mondeo 2.2 diesel [172bhp] estate for 5 years and towed 3 different "vans". Compass Corona, Elldis Avante 540 and now a Elldis Affinity 530. Great towcar with loads of pulling power. Has been VERY reliable.
6 speed manual gives 29-31 mpg whilst towing {with careful use of throttle]. Would buy another .
Bought a 2.0 tdci mondeo titanium x in 2013 and started to pull a sterling europa 500es straight away
the car pulls well with brisk acceleration through the gears 6th is usable on motorwaysand has plenty of grunt for over taking
getting 35+mpg on long runs
looking at getting a lunar quasar ultima next year will be keeping the mondeo though
Towing Bailey Pageant Bordeaux with ATC. Had a little difficulty with take off to start with but that might just have been me. Had the car chipped and now it is just great. Have also towed the caravan with my son in laws 2lt Mondeo III waste and prefer mine.. Good fuel economy 30 plus mph with best eeconomy mainly using 5th gear leaving 6th for level or slight down hill. In short all good and also would not bother with 2lt.
1st time towing for a while, 1.8 TDCI Mondeo Estate towing Ace Jubilee Viceroy had no trouble whatsoever, catch me if you can :)
Mondeo, pulling Lunar Lexon cs, 1400kg MTPLM. pulls like a train, no problems whatsoever, better than most 4x4s,
I have had different types of 4x4 over the years and I going back to a caravan from a motor home I needed a car that would give good mpg solo and good towing performance this mondo 2.0 tdci auto estate 2005 is one of the best tow cars I have had .I have towed to the south of France three time now no problems have to keeo an eye on the speedo as this car flys along even up hill it's a joy to tow with 130 bhp recommend the auto with cruise control,I was looking for the newer model when this 2005 low mileage Gia x came my way love this car
What caravan? Combination of aerodynamic Swift & 200ps Mondeo a perfect partnership. 32mpg towing and effortless driving.
Excellent tow car,had 140 bhp model prior to this but the 200 bhp is awesome.Cruise set to 60 at Penrith and didn't come out sixth till Glasgow,27 towing, 47 average solo so who needs a 4x4
I cannot fault my Mondeo 2.2 for the towing my caravan Swift Challenger 510, we have been to many countries in Europe and the average MPG is 28.4 in tow. I set my cruise control to 60mph and to make life easier for my Mondeo I never go in sixth gear , my RPM remains on a constant 1800 RPM,thus giving me plenty of power in reserve should I need to get out of a messy situation or overtake in the least possible time.
towing an elddis odyssey to france was a piece of cake. the car never missed a beat and returned 25 mpg average. plenty of spare power in the auto box
Excellent towing car. Good excelleration, easy to drive, very comfortable. Used to tow with Musso 2.3 petrol 4X4, but the ford estate out performs it 100%. Wish I had bought one long ago.
great performance 2.5 turbo loads torque outfit handles very well fuel mpg very good at constant speed motorways etc can keep in six gear no problem
2006 2.0 tdci Ghia x estate - 130,000 miles and still towing well,? Returns 38 mpg on long towing hauls . just done 2k round Scotland and back home. Only get into 6th gear on the flat but keep to 55-60 in 5th. Amazes me though how many people admit to towing at speeds over 60mph.
Not a good towing car. Always feel's underpowered on motorways. Though better on A roads. However all this could be because over van is heavy so if you have a smaller van it will be ok.
my 56 plate mondeo tdci 130 is a great towing car for my ranger 460/4 gt gt60,has only 36,000 miles on clock so will not be replacing it any time soon.excellent mpg.
This is the perfect towing rig, the 163 bhp power shift effortlessly drives without any problem what so ever. On my last trip up to the lakes it returned 31mpg on the return trip. Absolutely fantastic, i couldn't have wished for a more stable and responsive tow car.
The caravan is a dealer special and weighs about 40kgs more than this model. The car is a 2012 model Estate Zetec 163bhp. Only had two trips with this outfit, so it's early days but first impressions are really good. The last trip we covered about 140miles, mainly dual carriageways with some A roads in very, very strong winds in 3hrs (average speed around 47mph for trip) without any concerns. Never checked the mpg's. Loads of room, all in all a very good tow car. Too early to say anything about reliability but well pleased.
had a frontera 2.2 the mondeo pisses all over it
Have been towing for a year now with no problems seems a good set up
Strangely, despite being heavier than previous 'van (see review of same car with Elddis Xplore 474), this was a very good outfit match indeed. The outfit was very stable, even with crosswinds or passing HGVs. There was no lack of power either.
Unlike with the Elddis, the back end of the Mondeo was not especially weighed down. In fact, I had to add ballast (in the form of an awning) to the front of the Bailey to increase the noseweight a bit!
A very good combination indeed.
I have used the Mondeo for 4 summers first pulling a Lunar Jupiter and this year with the Lunar EB. It has not missed a beat. It has sufficient power to pull the odd overtake, passed a VW camper up an overtaking lane in Wales, and passed a few slow cars on A roads. I drive mostly for economy (apart from the odd overtake) and get around 30-32 mpg at 52-55 mph in 5th gear, with up to 60 mpg solo. A 4x4 might pull better up hill on wet grass but I have yet to go to a site where the owner would not help us if we needed them to in order to avoid damaging the site.
Had the car for 2 years,no problem towing a Abbey 418GTS, averages high 20`s to the gallon, cruise control work great when towing on motorway.
Actually towing an Xplore 474 at this weight. Mondeo had plenty of power, very easy to slip past 60mph, and the autobox made low speed work easy too. Biggest complaint was suspension seemed too low at the back, even grounding the towbar when pulling off from a slight down slope onto an upward cambered road. With the autobox, 25-30mpg.
I have towed for 5 years with a mondeo TDCi 135 bhp and a Bailey Senator Indiana and it has been the best towcar have ever driven
mondeo 2 litre tdci, just a great all round tow car, very capable, toured france twice, done thousands of miles over 3 years with this car on towing duty. only problem encounterd is the crap dual mass flywheel breakup wrecking the starter motor, 6 hundred pound to fix this problem.
don`t know the caravan is there..will pull away at any speed or any incline..its hard to remember caravan is on back..no need for the 2ltr its just a waste
Ford Mondeo is great car for towing. The engine is very powerful, good stability and very silent.
Such good tugs these 2.2 mondeos, mines the ghiax, towing a 2007 bailey senator indiana.I'm up the north lakes most weeks and the only time i drop a gear, is on the climb over shap.Drop into 5th, set the cruise to 60 and it doesn't waver. The vans very stable, but ths may be down to the Alko ATC system that it came with.
Mondeo is a superb towcar. Pulls up motorway hills with ease. Gives 28 mpg on long motorway pulls but over 31mpg towing on A class roads. Very stable. Will tow in 6th gear on flat but easier in 5th. Power and stability to accelerate past lorries on motorways and then drop back to 60mph cruise. Enormous boot capacity for carrying equipment. I bought mine 1 year old to avoid heavy first year depreciation.
I have used my Mondeo for towing the Adria since trading in (a much lighter) caravan two years ago. In this time I have done three 3,000 mile trips to SW Spain and a similar trip to the south of France as well many other shorter journeys. The Mondeo is fine in most circumstances having a good strong engine that copes well with the caravan. As the weight ratio is poor with this match I try and carry as much weight as possible in the car. Under more demanding conditions the Mondeo struggles a bit. 6th gear is rarely used and it tends to overheat on longer hills. A replacement clutch tends to point to the fact that I'm pushing it a bit with a caravan of this size. The mondeo's replacement will be a heavier, more powerfull car
i have just towed my elddis 482 with with ford mondeao ecoboost 1.6 and well impressed it pulled from lights no problem stayed at 50mph in 6 gear on motorway retured about 50 mpg on normal roads about 34 mpg all in all really good ride no snaking all ways in total control recomend it
I agree with Henrik. This is not as hard in reality. My Mondeo -02 wagon 146Hp manages a 6 meter 1600 kg Caravan. Even on mountain roads in Norway. Shure a diesel is better, but the petrol is fully usable.
never towed before but been out a few times now and the car performs brillantly. on the motorway with cruise control on you can forget the caravan is there!!! great car for towing.
The Mk4 Mondeo is a fantastic tow car. In estate form it sits beautifully planted on the road and feels very stable. You never feel you are not in control of the van.
There's plenty of power and torque too, and 30mpg towing with bikes on the roof too!!
Oh, and if you're thinking of a big 4x4 instead, bear in mind that if you want to have a roof load like family bikes, then it's a lot easier to get them on the roof of an estate car.
I know this site calculates the ratio to be high and only gives it 4.5 stars, but I think it's an excellent combination.
Mondeo Est 2.0 163 BHP 2010 tows the 540 Challenger with no trouble what so ever. I think this is a perfect match and will cope very well over most terrain. I would suggest fitting a detachable tow bar with the designated electrics loom. I had this fitted at Genisis Towing Centre in Telford and are very professional people to deal with. They will also set the vehicle management system up when the installation takes place.
Even though it's a 96% weight rating the Mondeo tows very well. I have had no issues with stability on motorways or A roads at 60mph. Handbrake needs a very firm pull on hills but still returns mid 30's mpg while towing.
A good solid tow on the moterway, at times you don't know its there. starting on a slope requires a bit of clutch slip as this model does hesitate at low revs with a load due to turbo lag. I get between 31 and 36 mph with this rig towing depending on road and wind conditions. I would go for a 2ltr next time I think
A pleasure, excellent performance, just set the cruise and forget. (2.0tdci) Rear suspension a little soft, either opt for sports or as I have done, fit rear spring assistors. We also carry 2x cycles on a tow bar mounted carrier with ease. Excellent tow car, miles better than the BMW I used previously.
Wonderful have not had a moments trouble
towing with this outfit is brilliant, motorway work is brilliant, can easily keep at 60mph. Overtaking can be good even in 6th gear, on slight inclines when taken lorries and anything large, needs to drop to 5th but again no problems. Can easily go over limit so be carefull with this!! Will need steady clutch work from start when on slopes or wet grass, but once started easily gets to max speed. Outfit is steady solid calm on road side winds when strong can be scary but with care like any outfit no issues
This is a superb rig, the auto box and the power makes for very relaxing and stressless towing. The downside is 22MPG at a steady 60mph !
had the caravan for a year, it tows better behind the mondeo than the old 200tdi rangerover, nice and stable with plenty of power.
if you reverse a caravan up a hill no wonder you burned your clutch because you push the caravan brake on when you reverse
I have had car and van for 2yrs. The best set up i have ever had in performance and towability. with some 40yrs and 12 caravans later. treat yourself to either.especially the mondeo.
where have all the reviews gone for this car ? looked a week ago and there were four reviews
I have towed many times and the car performs superbly. I have the 130BHP model and get 30-35MPG towing and 52MPG on its own, 6th Gear is a little flat on motorway inclines but drop to 5th and away we go. Great towing car even with 100k miles on.
This is the best tow car that I have owned (even better than 4wd Subaru Legacy).Fuel economy around 30mpg. Have towed to Bavaria, Italy and France without any problems - including towing through Switzerland
At a 96% match i have nothing but praise for the mondeo it copes very well and responsive to towing and returns combined fuel use of 34mpg would not hesitate to recommend the car for towing
We have towed with the 130bHp Mondeo estate but it always felt underpowered. This 2.2. engine is a good match for the power and torque available. I haven't modified the suspension in any way i.e. doughnuts , springs etc. and the outfit handles well.
Last August my wife and I went out for a cup of coffee, bought a caravan magazine and, that afternoon, bought an Eldiss Xplore 452! We had last owned a caravan 16 years earlier.
In September we set off for a 3-week holiday in France. Our car was a Mondeo 1.8 petrol. We had no problem towing but the hills made driving somewhat hard-work-lots of gear-changing. I decided to make the change to a Mondeo 2.0 diesel. I thought the change would be marginal. In fact, it is hugely significant, We have just had another 3 weeks in France towing 1650 miles up hill and down dale. 30 mpg and hardly a gear change. I consulted What towcar before I bought the 2.0 TDCi and it was top class advice.I would recommend the car unreservedly.
John Thompson
Have taken delivery of new car and caravan within the last 3 months and am absolutely delighted with both! The combination works a treat, the Mondeo performs better at on road towing than my old Discovery. Recently went to Cornwall and the rerurn trip from Falmouth to Cirencester took dead on 4 hours, no stopping, cruise control set at 63mph and was very relaxing with the auto box, can highly recommend.
Excellent tow car. Plenty of power in 130bhp version. Comfortable towing around 38mpg and over 50mpg solo. You will not regret towing with this vehicle.
I use this Ford Mondeo to tow my Bailey Pegasus 534. The car tows the van with ease and maintaining a 55-60mph on flat roads is easy using 5th gear. The car can struggle with inclines if you use the 6th gear. The stability is very good, but you will feel the effect in strong winds as with all cars. I feel this is a good match and have had no issues towing the Pegasus.
130 brake version has no probs, just like towing a suitcase !!!, i see from previous reviews that people are going upto 1490kg and im pulling 1159, leaves me 331 kg of more beer !!!! lol.
Just collected our new van form Lowe and Rhodes in Stoke, spent a night in thepeak district and then drove back to Stockton on Tees, averaged about 60mph approx 30mpg all the way, struggled slighty on the hills over the pennines M62, and had to let the trucks overtake me, probably down to this being my first van and not using the gears correctly, but on the flat had no trouble overtaking.
My caravan is an Avondale Avocet which I tow with a 2002 2.0 Ltr Mondeo petrol Auto. Apparently according to the info I have found on the net this caravan is to heavy for the car, but in the two years I have had this caravan I have found the Mondeo to be an excellent tow car. It has not put a foot wrong and pulls the caravan with ease, this may be due to us probably due to only taking what we need and never overloading the car or the caravan. I am only now considering selling the car due to requiring a bigger caravan.
The car will pull this load fairly comfortably once established, pulling away on a slope needs 1800rpm and clutch slip to get a smooth pull away, this is due to the turbo coming in at these revs. Have chipped the car which has given an easier pull away.
Will be looking to get a 2lt Auto Estate next time.
the mondeo 2ltr tdi 09 pulls the twin axle caravan very well although the match is quite close. would recommend this as a good towcar.
This car is very impressive. Towed to Braemer up 1:8 at 50MPH. Power to set cruise in 6th on motorway and will hold that on most motorway inclines. Getting about 28MPG towing. Bailey Olympus tows true and straight even on rough and ptching roads.
Having changed my caravan for the Bailey Indiana the ford over 60mph starts to sway I think this is because the match is 94% will be changing for a heavier car/4x4
The whattow car review has it about right. We went to France and covered over 1400 miles towing. Not the slightest problem on the flat but much gear changing on the hills. A bit of a pain but no real problem.
We did take great care to pack light and level.
Having gone out for a coffee we ended up buying a new tourer! I didn't want to change cars as well. However, when I do change I will upgrade to a 2.0 tdci.
this result is about right the mondeo does struggle up even a modest slope ,you have use third gear a lot and the rear suspension is really low ,you need to take off the jockey wheel.progessive springs would probably help.
tows well throughout...inclines,motorways,twisty b roads,6th gear usuable quite often, the only drawback is the fuel consumption towing is about 27mpg however viewing other Bailey "slabs" about par for model. The mondy zetec hatch has rather soft rear suspension maybe sports suspension would be better package
I bought an Elddis odessey 634 2010 twin axle,1725KG. pulls and stops like no tomorrow!. Had a 4,0 ltr Range Rover before and did'nt tow our smaller van as good as the Mondy. Fantastic bit of kit.
I have found the Mondeo a excellent towing car and some times forget I am towing the caravan . The sixth gear is ok for 50+ on the flat but I tend to use 5th gear which is excellent 35+.
changed upto to a swift 5 birth Allohuette from a 2 birth. thought it was going to be very different but harldy any change. the car performance is faultless, still returning 35-40 mpg on both motorway or A/B roads. highly recommend this style of car, dont need a big 150hp, just plenty of torque! its stable, feels safe and even the wife takes turns in driving.
My van is in fact the Avante 630 which is 40kg lighter than the nearest selectable choice it tows fine, its a touch heavy but I have been towing for 20 years. It requires a bit of clutch managment from a standing start on a steep incline and forget 6th gear for most of the time. I seldom go over 50mph, never over 60mph and would not hesitate to recomend this combination to expirienced drivers prepared to drive carefully.
First week towing, some 500 mainly motorway miles. Found 5th best and returned 39mpg overall. The car tows very well especially when the major weight items were over the caravan axle. The boot was empty save for our dog. Very stable and acceleration when needed was excellent.
Once you get going the car tows well ,but it does hesitate at low revs,I think its because of the 1.8 engine.I think the 2.0 version is a better choice.
Absolutely fabulous. No matter what the gear is, it just pulls, and boy does it pull...with 196bhp and 480Nm torque I don't even feel the caravan coming along... Not much to say about fuel consumption when towing, but every litre I fill up, is well used... :D
Then again, it's the same without the caravan...
Not a problem pulling this size caravan - I made sure not to have the boot estate loaded as the rear can drop a bit with weight. I loaded caravan so it was pretty well balanced too. Did 80kph not a problem
although at 93% this new mondeo pulls like a dream on a visit to north yorkshire recently it made a mockery of the hills that it throwed at her,on the motorway easy to for get the van was attached to car so smooth at times hit 70mph as a result of smoothness ,but tend to stick to 60mph as law states
mondeo 2.0tdci tow great can use 6 gear on flat .its towed 3 different vans good fuel ecomony
Excellent combination. Previously had a Freelander TD4 and although the Freelander felt slightly more firm and stable the advantages of pulling the van and everyday use with the Mondeo far outweigh it. Went down to the French Alps this summer ( 1,800 miles) and car returned 34 mpg and 55 mpg normal use. The journey time compared to Freelander was better than previous yr- might be cos I got to know some short cuts! Found it best to inflate tyres to 34 front and 36 rear whilst towing for firmer, less wallowing, ride. Never been stuck on wet/ muddy site but always loads of help available.
no problem towing as long as u use comensense dont overload caravan as you are towing around 90 percent at max caravan load but we never load van to full weight mondeo tows very well flys up hills in third and fourth gears good overtaking at 40 to 60 mph can reduce caravan weight if no leisure battery and light designed gas bottles
Well pleased with my combination, Mondeo tows the Bailey Ranger 550/6 with minimal effort, i set the cruise control and almost forget it is there, I have just returned from Cumbria to NE Scotland in windy conditions/driving rain and the onboard computer was telling me i was getting 36/37mpg, this mondeo is a great improvement on the older model and I'm hooked, it is good for everyday use and stands up admirably to the towing job.
Mondeo Estate is a very competent tow car. We have no problems pulling our van. Might try it with winter/mud tyres as it's not too good on wet grass.mud on slight inclines. But then unless it's a 4wd I guess that's inevitable.
Was a little apprehensive about the combination (92%), but have had several outings including Cheshire to S Wales with no problems at all. Excellent mpg - 30 mpg with occasional use of aircon! However, I never drive above 60mph and am very careful about weights. More than happy with this outfit, even if it is above the recommended 85%.
This combination occurred to be dangerous because of unstability a couple years ago when at summer vacation trip.
towed a lunar quasar before my sterling europa alot heavier but monty performs well agree just watch nose wieght as all montys doesnt like reverse on clutch but with mover no probs high mpg though
Excellent match between car and caravan - have towed in Alps and Pyrenees - faultless performance.
This is our first caravan and we bought the Mondeo to tow it. We have been on 3 trips so far and find it very stable and easy to tow. Of course we have nothing to compare it with, but we are very happy with our outfit.
i tow bailey ranger gt60 540/6 no problem at all .97000 miles still good to tow with
ST220'S CAN'T TOW APPARANTLY, NOT 'APPROVED' FOR TOWING BY FORD. ALL A LOAD OF RUBBISH!!, IVE TOWED THE ABOVE COMBINATION OVER 300 MILES AND RETURNED 24MPG OVERALL!!!!. CLUTCH SAME AS A DIESEL ONE, USE ST DIESEL TOWBAR, IT DOES FIT TRUST ME. WHAT A MOTOR, SOLO AND TOWING.
My new mondy pulls the GT60 a dream smooth with out effort.'van sits nicely. Yes its on the high side for matching but still no problem.
We have been towing this unit for about a year now. The Mondeo pulls like a train and is very stable. I have not really measured fuel economy but anything is better than out last tow car (Subaru Forester). Although the Forester was better than the Mondeo on damp grassy hills I have only had difficulty getting off a pitch once with the Mondeo when the traction control just would not let be get any power down onto the mud. I would recommend the Mondeo as a tow car but at this age just lookout for suspension bush issues.
have had no problem with this combination i am still getting over 30mpg never been far enough on motorways to give overall average mpg
I have a 55 plate 2ltr TDCi Ghia X Estate and tow a Bailey Ranger GT60 510/4 (1281 kg) a great tow very stable across Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor coming back from Cornwall last year, very good on any class of road with excellent economy.
Excellent, tows with ease, car has now done 36K and no power drop off is evident, although I tow at 60 kilos on the ball and always careful to load properly, great car, better than a Passat and cheaper to run and maintain.
Calcs gave me 67% match, but on entering my review, it shows 55% BEWARE!
Caravan was not a Avondale Dart, as the CI Europa wasn't listed!
Towing a very light caravan, loads of power in reserve. Cruises very well in 6th but revs a little low. Needs 5th for uphill, but 5th is economical. gets 30mpg cruising on M'way. I'm very happy
I have recently purchased an Abbey Aventura 317 and towed it home that being Cornwall from Norfolk its superb rock steady helped by the Alko hitch if you are looking for a light fixed bed van this is the one to go for. The Mondeo 2ltr tdci Zetec s is a great tug cant add a great deal more as everyones elses comments speak realms .
mondeo 2.2 ghia x 2004,towing a swift charisma 1350 kg with roof box car pulled up hill no probs fuel rtn at a steady 60mph was 44mpg found that speed was to slow 4 6th gear so kept in 5th for 200miles down the m5 was thinking of a new one but changed mind best car ive had would pull a house down
my ford mondeo tows our lunar with little effort .its very easy to forget its there im still acheaving 30 -35 mph
2.2 Ghia X (2007) fully laden with dog towing a single axle Bretagne was a joy. Only problem encounted was trying to keep to the speed limits!
I find my unit lovely and well balanced, rarely travel with any loading and travel to many rallies with CCCF all over Britain This unit has served me and my friends for many years and is still as new in many ways.
i purchased a 2008 petrol mondeo 2 ltr 5speed manual to tow my swift charisma 555 the caravan is just below the towing limit stated by ford for this vehicle.
on the open road towing was superb but when i had to stop on a slight incline i had to give it an enormouse amount of revs and spin the wheels to get away
when i went on holiday i had to reverse the caravan up a slope onto the pitch,to manage this i had to slip the clutch to such an extent that the local ford dealer remarked on the clutch smell when i took it to them the following week
although Ford Motor Company state that this vehicle will tow 1500 kg they will not replace the clutch when it is burnt out by pulling away on inclines this is not covered by the warranty
unfortunately i am now selling mine as i have no intention of getting stranded with a burnt out clutch
I WOULD NOT RECOMEND ANY ONE TO BUY THIS CAR FOR TOWING
on top of this page, the match was 97%. after i wrote a review it came down to 83%, no wonder i have had no trouble???
i have been towing with this car for three years,i have not had any trouble at all. considering the weight match
Very interested in Pauls comment. Our mondeo TDCI 130bhp has also been brilliant until three weeks ago when the turbo blew on the A420 at 50mph. Green flag assisted us with a brilliant rescue service. Likewise I have lost confidence with the Mondeo. \So disapointed and broke
Brilliant at towing. Despite being a 95% weight ratio, the car performs pretty effortlessly. I've only ever read about snaking - never experienced it myself, even in high winds or when passing or being passed by very lareg vehicles on the motorway.
The maximum possible speed was not correct in teh evaluation provided by this site - I've accidentallky slipped up to 80 mph before. It is someting I now watch out for! It is genuinely easy to forget the caravan is there sometimes!
Bought the mondeo cheap! my C5 138bhp gave up after limp-mode problems and £800 in bills absolutely loved the C5 120k. BUT! the mondeo has been a dream. The car is 2 years older, 80k on the clock and I have covered 2k towing the sterling this summer? First class would recommend. Economy good, power plenty, top gear 5th easy 50 ~ 60mph and more if needed to get out of trouble. What I don't understand is! how many families are driving @ 70mph + sorry folks that sought of speed with any kit is a NO NO!
Although this van looks way too heavey for the mondeo it pulls it great !!
Cannot believe more people are not using a chip to improve the performace ???
mine does 55mpg (no van) and 32mpg towing this huge 23 foot beast !!
like others say ...put the cruse on ...the aircon on ....and sit back and and watch the miles go by ...
before I purchased the van I was told that my car can tow 1.525kgs and my car was ok ? I drove down to west wales and back, no problem, but I can't help thinking is the ratio between car and caravan to close for comfort.
Having pulled my Swift Challeger 540 throughout western EU I cannot fault it. Brilliant pull-away at all stops, and that includes hill-starts. Motorway driving enables 6th gear over 55mph and other driving on continent enables 32+mpg overall - best tow car I've ever had and that doesn't mention the boot space - excellent!
Struggled towing for years with a 2002 1.8i16v Vauxhall Vectra, but recently bought a 2005 2.2 Tdci Mondeo Ghia X. This car is just truly perfect for towing, there is bags of tourque and it was a dream to tow with. On motorways put it into 6th and set the cruise control and away you go, I only ever need to use 5th on steep inclines. I get around 42mpg without the caravan and around 27mpg towing with full load including 2 bikes and a kayak on the roof bars. Neither power nor fuel economy is affected by using the air conditioning whilst towing. I would recommend this car to anyone who wishes to tow a caravan, brilliant!
Very happy towing in 5th gear at 60 with cruise control. In 6th revs drop to about 1500 and engine did not sound too happy. Any comments from others about using 6th gear.
my mondeo tdci 130 is a great tow car.we tow a swift charisma 570. forget that its their.loads of power and torqe.good job with all the things wife brings.
car is 2nd mondeo to tow adria, so far very pleased, doesnt feel like a big van, as its so light
My caravan is a bailey ranger 460/4 series 6 2009, i have a 1997 2.016v auto. The car tows brilliantly straight and true. plenty of power, and still getting 27mpg. if i had one critisism it would be it can tend to get hot up steep very long hills.however i have put in a 3 way switch so i can manually operate the cooling fan. perfect! this fault i had with other mondeos same yr. dont worry though, easy 10 min fix it must be one of the best towcars for £400.well recommended. check autobox is sound 88k max or it must have been replaced if not walkaway £1000 to fix. hope this helps
The Mondeo has plenty of power in normal towing conditions, but we have been in trouble on 2 ocassions when the site road is more gravely and not on the level and on one ocassion we needed a push!. The second ocassion was our own fault and went up a narrow steep bendy hill in Devon, where we missed the the correct turning. Motorway driving no prob.
The Mondeo III 2ltr petrol pulls my Swift Challenger 470 well in all conditions, fuel consumption about 28-32 on a good day,20 -25 if you start to push it.I have been towing caravan's for Year's mostly with diesels, but the Mondeo will do most thing's OK anyway, the secret is not to be to heavy with the right foot.
i tow a swift challenger 4 berth 1992 van my car so good it dont even now the caravan is there
Mondeo ST 2.2 TDCi Estate 2007 pilling a new Bailey Pageant Series 7 Limousin.
Rock solid performance. The self levelling suspension on the Mondeo performs brilliantly.
Caravan has ALKO hitch & stabiliser. Caravan also has new ATC electronic trailer control for extra safety.
Towed around 300 miles round trip at around 55-60mph. Both trailer and car sat very comfortably despite the odd juggernaut or mad 4X4 towing idiot passing at 75mph.
I am delighted with the performance and although well above the limits some would consider, felt that the combination was really steady and stable.
Found it difficult to keep the nose weight low enough. Don't load up the fromt locker - you'll end up with 120kg on the nose at first attempt like me.
Watch the nose weight!! Store your stuff in the bathroom or under the fixed double bed. Nose weight seemed most comfortable at around 80-90kg.
One word of caution - the Limousin only allows loads of 211kg above the tare weight to give around 1572kg all up - DON'T EXCEED THIS. It pays to keep the lovely light chassis light - and it turned in 35mpg on my trip.
Ford Mondeo ST TDCi Estate, lovely tow car more than enough power and torque. Only problem I encounter is having low profile tyres which do struggle to keep contact (spinning) with the road when pulling away if too much acceleration.
130 mondeo is excellent at towing ace firestar.although this is a 94% match in the uk I have had no problems whatsoever. loading and noseweight must be correct.
Had this outfit for 3 years with no problems. The auto box is excellent and handles the van well round town. Sometimes need to manually select gears on country roads to avoid constant downshifting. Very stable and plenty of power for most situations. Get 30 to 35 mpg when towing.
Only issue was when towing to Spain over the Pyrennees fully laden in 35 degree heat and on steep long mountain climbs the engine protection did cut in to stop overheating. However taking it more steady would have probably avoided this, so the turbo was not being used. There were also plenty of lorries who were also struggling to get up the hills climbing at 5 to 10 mph. So it was more to do with the extreme conditions then the car.
I also upgraded the rear springs to MAD suspension as the rear did sit very low.
Overall, I would recommend the car we a similar van as it performs excellent solo and with the van on the back. Best auto box I have ever driven.
The Mondeo TCDi 130 is an excellent tow car. We tow a Europa 495 and were able to tour with ease to Northumberland and the South Coast without any drama. It even averaged 30.1 mpg on the motorway from Carlisle to Manchester. Stability was assured.
The 130 mondeo is not only the best tow car I have owned, pound for pound it is the best value car I have owned. Coupled to the Senator it has no problems, except minor traction problems in the wet (older LX model with no traction control). The car is 6 years old with 110,000 miles on the clock, and still out performs 'boy racers' when solo.
another best towcar, towing my Senator Virginia effortlessly at 94% ofthe kerbweight.
towing the bailey was a breeze, even driving up twisty mountain roads not a problem,a great pulling car,not to hard on the diesel either
superb !! only thing is i dont get more than 26/27mpg when towing at 60 ish usually a bit less particularly if mpg worked out accurately 2/3 mpgless than computer
tyre wear etc otherwise more than capable
I have a 56 Mondeo 2.0 tdci (6mt).This car is great for towing. It pulls well on inclines you could have it on all day it would not make a differance to me.
Just returned from 1st trip in our new compass, A bit concerned about the weight differental at first but the TDCi 03 Mondeo performed great, lots of torque and averaging 32mpg @ 55-60mph on a trip up to chatsworth on the M1. Great towing car although I will have to watch the loading weight next summer.
good towcar in everyway had a 2.0 130bhp before this one that was good but the 2.2 just has the edge for overtaking and uphill driving and i still get 50 mpg on a good run nice spec is the titanium
First trip out with this outfit last weekend and it towed brilliantly. Agree with previous reviews about clutch but once your used to it, theres no problem. I'm towing with a 2.0 TDCI Zetec S 05 plate. 37mpg towing 50 mpg solo. Very stable outfit would highly recommend.
Having changed from a small Bailey to a larger Ace Jubilee Globetrotter, I had to change vehicles as well. The first time out with the Mondeo TDCI 130 was a joy to behold. Plenty of power and torque, no problems on hills, motorways and other roads and cruises easlily in 5th gear.It pulls the van effortlessly.
A superb tow car, and I should know having competed in a number of caravan road rallies when they were allowed many years ago, the car has lots of power for overtaking ( don't tell anyone but recently to pass a row of 6 trucks which were nose to tail on a motorway, to get by and back into the n/s lane I had it up to 80 mph) with no ill effects in fact I wondered how fast it would go.
towing the swift,(a different model than metioned but couldn't find mine listed so this was nearest) the mondeo is unerved. once moving i don't really notice the caravan on the back! its very light, and with a stabaliser very simply to tow. my first outing with this outfit was longleat, 200 miles from home, and we arrived 20 minutes later than google maps suggest (without caravan) the car didnt struggle once.
This report is pretty accurate. It is according to my experience for driving this combination now for 2 years.
The engine is underpowered as soon as you hit a slope. Even a faint one. 5th gear is not used when driving with a caravan.
Full consuption solo is 1 liter to 16 km, where with the Knaus Sport 450 on the hook, 1 to 9/10 is reachable.
As a complete novice, I had absolutely no problems with the Mondeo TDCi, pulling the Fleetwood Sonata around the Peak District. The car performed well and even managed 5th gear up hill. I felt it had plenty of power and on the straight & level sat nicely at 60 with cruise control on.
Can not fault this combo towing is a pleasure, on a 450 mile trip to Scotland, I avaraged 35 mpg at 60 mph Avarage speed even on Scotish roads mostly in 5th gear.
what more can be said.my 2.0 tdci is a pleasure to tow with,i agree with the clutch problem, but i can live with that.40 mpg on my last trip.tkinking of buying the new shape tdci can anybody give me any feedback on them.
I can't add too much to the above. Having only towed with 1.6L petrols previously this car is in a different league. The only possible issue is as previously mentioned about the clutch. It is sometimes quite easy to stall in a careless moment and can take a while for engine speed to pick up for take off. This is only seconds of course but in the panic of the moment is seems longer. 6th gear is very possible between 50-60mph (or higher abroad) but it's not unreasonable to expect to drop to 5th up an incline. The other problem is keeping within speed limits!
I have just come back from holiday and beyond the clutch burning out before I got to France, it was very good. I thought what a good car this Mondeo is.
i am supprised how much my car will tow.
I am more than happy with my outfit, but when climbing steep hills the temperature guage rises until you have reach the top. Then drops when normal road conditions resume. Not sure if I have a problem with the electric fan.
I have a 130bhp 03 plate Mondeo Tdci Ghia X and have just bought a Mondeo 140BHP Tdci estate Ghia on an 08 plate.
All I can say is, I thought the 130BHP Mondeo was good at towing my Abbey Vogue 540, but the new Mondeo is in a class of it's own. It is a true pleasure to drive, acceleration comes in buckets, it is so stable when towing even at the higher speeds with a cross wind. You will have difficulty keeping to speed limits as it has bags of power and just wants to pull all the time. 6th gear towing is a bit better than the 03 Mondeo but it really likes only up to 5th gear. Fuel consumption is about the same as my other Mondeo and returns 35-40 mpg when towing on Motorways and 30-35mpg on A roads. I can see why it has been voted best Towcar for 2 years straight. I think it will be up there next year as well.
I have an 03 Tdci Ghia X saloon Mondeo 130BHP and it is the first towing car I have bought that is a dream. Acceleration and driving with the Abbey Vogue 540 is effortless and pulls in all conditions. Good fuel consumption 35 mpg towing A roads, close to 40 average on motorways and without the van, you can get 60-64 mpg on motorways. It's a shame that you cannot use 6th gear much as this would give you brilliant fuel consumption. Experienced first serious hill start last weekend when stopped at Callowtop Hill Caravan park near Ashbourne, entrance is 1 in 5 hill. As soon as traction control kicked in, it was easy to move away without the smell of burning clutch and tyres. I would highly recommend this towing outfit.
Absolutley fabulouse vehicle for towing, couldn't wish for more fuel ecconomey and excellent pulling power up steep inclines on motorway/country/by-roads. 10/10 all round. Would reccomend to anyone + low maintenence with the advantage of a timming chain( instead of the ever so unfortunateley hapenning timming belt snap on other vehicles). just recentley i have done cornwall= 400 miles there at a reasonable 40mpg(on diesel) at approx 60mph Excellent MOTOR,i'am well pleased with here..
car has sufficient pulling power, i find that most of the guts of the car are in 3rd gear, does struggle slightly on hills due to lack of nose weight on car, 5th gear is not useable under 55 mph, but at 60mph on dual carriageways the car runs great in 5ty gear and averages about 30 mpg, i found that i needed a drop plate on the car to lower the caravan to stop BOBBING as the caravan was rear heavy due to end kitchen, apparently very common problem on the mk 2 mondeo as the towbar goes through the bumper and not under it(mk1 and mk3 i've seen). hope this helps with any other mondeo mk2 owners, believe me! Buy a drop plate and lower your towbar, get 65kg nose weight on the van and feel the difference!!!.
my mondeo 2.0 115 bhp tdci estate it getting 31.0 mpg towing my sterling opal max weight 1425kg..could anyone tell me if this is any good as i was told by a guy with exactly the same car he was getting 40 mpg ????..ricey.lindsey@fsmail.net plus my mondeo tow fantastic please let me know about yours...
new to the world of caravanning bought combination as result of a lot questioning and boring friends who are caravanners.no problems so far apart from when on the motorway you have keep an eye on the speedometer as you will quickly be breaking the speed limit.
fabulous performance you forget the van is there and that does mean you have to watch your speed
got an 04 tdci zetec, 6 speed box with 90 000miles on the clock,1st time out for the weekend 55 miles to perth up the motorway ,great car had a tddi before which is also good but the tdci is fantastic doing an illegal 70 mph in 6th gear coming back no bother at all.
with my mondeo 20 td di 114 bhp i tow a compass echo ls 400 4 berth weighing 850kgs i find it struggels in 2 and 3 gear and tends to struggels to get up to 60 mph on the motorway with the caravan but when it gets up to speed it is great to drive and it struggels on hills does anyone else have the same problems with there mondeo 20 td di
i have just purchased a mondeo 20 td di 114 bhp y reg i tow a compass echo 400 ls there is 2 adults and 2 also and the car the cars seems to have problems in first and second gear starting of and has problems getting to 60 on the motorway and has problems on hills or is it just my mondeo
I tow with a 2.0 Tdci Ghia mondeo, used to have a C4 which would struggle with my compass corona but the mondeo loves it- and always drives better after a 300 mile tug to cornwall. I average on 25 mpg and get up to 85mph on a clear road. Awesome car
I have found this combination to be the best yet, the mondeu 2.0 tdci is a fantastic towcar.
I tow with an 05 Mondeo 2.0ltr tdci ghia x pulling a Swift Islay 1411Kg and have no trouble at all 1st to 5th but it does not like 5th gear.Fuel returns 33 to the gallon on Scottish roads.I agree with Mr Kayley on the clutch and the fact you can forget about the van.
Towing a 2001 Compass Rallye 490/4L. Need to drop to 4th when going up long motorway gradients, but otherwise, it pulls away well and apart from using a bit more diesel, goes fine.
M54 past Telford(the hill before you see Wales), got stuck in traffic jam last year, put it in first, let the clutch out, feet off the pedal, sat back and enjoyed the scenery.
My caravan is an Avondale Mayfair ( dart) 515/4, my mondoe is a 2ltr 1.6v Petrol Auto.
The car is more than happy to take the caravan anywhere steep hills it loves, the only problems I have is 1/its petrol and 2/ its a front wheel drive that struggles for traction.
I am so happy with this combination that I will not be swopping just looking for a diesel. and many happy miles to come.
i think it is very good, on m way i tend to keep it 60 65 in 5th gear any lower and the car will die, you have to keep it around 3000 revs and it will go along very happy in top gear, i get around 28 mpg out of my car. at the end of the day you have to use your head get he car in the right gear and you keep the car moving i v passed big 4x4 going up hills on m ways and the look you get is brill, very good car
I tow a 1990 Buccaneer Elan 14 with my 03 2.0 TDCI Ghia X hatch. Tows very well with plenty of power throughout the first 5 gears, if not to much! easy to forget you have a caravan behind you at times. 6th gear is only achievable driving illegally over 60mph, at 60mph th engine labours in 6th. Set the cruise control at 55-60 in 5 gear and the miles disappear effortlessly. Economy excellent. Managed 35 mpg towing from Burnley to the Lakes. Only critism is the Mondeo diesels notoriously jumpy clutch from setting off, very easy to stall with or without a caravan.
i have had my mondeo for 2 years now it is the best
tow car i have had no problems towing at all.
mondeo 2.0.tddi 2002 hatchback with 2 adults and 2 kids is a good match for power and speed with an 2002 elddis 505 on the back cruising easily on the motorway in 5th gear.
I recently bought an Avondale Dart 630-6 and the 2-litre Mondeo tdci pulls it with no strain at all,but you need to keep it in 5th gear for best performance as engaging 6th gear at the uk speed limits does not give you any acceleration response if needed for emergency it was really stable in cross winds
car tows the caravan with ease , turning, braking, and acceleration are great
I once owned a 1998 S reg estate 2.0ltr and on solo work it could not fault it. But when i had the caravan attached a Avondale Dart 510/5, the outfit was very unstable. There was alot of bounce and sway from the rear, so much i had to stop quite a few times to re-arrange the payload just so i could try and get a safe outfit. Acceleration with the caravan was not to brilliant and did struggle up hill alot. On the flat it was fairly ok but again took it's time to reach 60mph. Overtaking vehicles as small as a van caused a few problems, and when a lorry or coach passed there was alot of gear work to try and regain the speed. The outfit was @ the 83/85 mark well within british guidlines, but needed work
I am thinking of changing to a BaileyVirginia and was looking for towing guide as my ford has loads of power
mondeo 2.0.tdci est is great still get 34 mpg at a steady 60 towed all over france and spain for a 115 bhp its got plenty of power
The towing is just a pleasure. Both the power and the stability. Always looking forward to another trip!
My first experience of towing a caravan has been absolutely no problem with the Mondeo LX 2.0 TDCI 130 bhp. The Lunar Stellar is quite lightweight compared to some and is perfectly matched with the Mondeo. If anyone is considering towing for the first time, you won't go wrong with this combination!
I have a mondeo 130 TDCI fitted with a towing chip. The outfit is very stable and we caravan all year and have had no problems without a 4x4. Before I had the chip around 32mpg was the norm with the van on I now average 40mpg and 60mpg solo. The extra torque is helpful on motorways. Just need to be careful with the nose weight. An absolute joy!!
This car has no problems at all towing the swift, sometimes you forget it is there. I always stay in 4th gear and average 35mpg which is great. I have the 130hp and it still really pulls away quite quickly when needed. All ways handy on slip roads onto the motorway.
I have been towing caravans for 20 years and have not found a more stable combination.
Both car & caravan 1st class combo.
Dont forget that when towing, a steady accelaration is
always the best and safest way and the same when breaking.
towing with the mondeo is excellent just read the reviews they speak for themselves
we tow a compass rallaye 482 with a mondeo 2.0tddi 2001.pulls this van no problem, top speeds of 70mph taking in to account the van is 1400kg.good balance.i rate this car good work horse.
Towing a swift challenger 400SE in Italy was great with our Mondeo TDCI estate until we tried to cross from the east coast (Vieste) to Rome on a very hot day (42 degrees) at altitude (2000 metres or so) when I had to drop to 3rd gear and keep below 40mph just to prevent overheating, the warning for which is that the aircon shuts down!
Cracking engine power but can struggle on steep hill pull aways until you get going then its fantastic. we have an Abbey Impression 520 which is not listed on here with the alco stabilizer. I've found to get the best balance is to put anything heavy over the caravan axle rather than the car boot, this stopped the car bounch dramatically due to hard suspension. As for fuel economy solo average about 42mpg towing about 27mpg.
Ford Mondeo ST TDCI Estate, top tow car for the job! 35 Mpg on average journey. Car comfortable for long journey as has Recaro seats and is fully loaded! Nearly bought new shape mondeo but is 100kg lighter as it is built on the Volvo V70 chassis which would not match well with the Van.
My mondeo is a 2006 zetec estate 130bhp an pulls my van wonderfully.Cruise control 70mph on the motoway is great dont even know we have got the van on the back.
Our Mondeo TDCI 130bhp was initially a brilliant tow car for our ABI & within the 85% rule - Nothing seem to be a problem , UNTIL the turbo blew up traveling at 55mph on the A14. The RAC were brilliant with their recovery services - The Turbo replacement cost over £1500 & we no longer have the confidence to tow with the Ford Mondeo
tows quite well but not as well as our bailey ranger 470/4 worth changing gears more often though for the better quality van. phil dilley tows 520/4 with his which amazes me as van is heavier than car
ive jusbrought the van and been out twice , the mondeo seems to tow it very well but the clutched slipped reversing a few feet up a incline so i hope this isnt normal but a good tow car nether the less
I have just purchased a bailey pageant S5 provence with 94% tow match to my mondeo 2ltr diesel 130bhp.
May need assisters on the car but perfomes superb, plenty of power & a pleasure to tow.
I tow a Swift Challenger 480SE with a 2-litre Mondeo TDCi 130. The Mondeo is a brilliant towcar. It pulls the van with ease, uphill and down dale (the 6-speed box helps). It will hold 6th on motorways, even with a moderate gradient, and return around 30mpg at legal speeds (without the van, 40 round town and 50+ on a run). In comparison with my previous tug, a Discovery Td5 auto, it is brilliant and I don't regret selling thr 4x4 at all - it was sluggish and spent most of its time in 3rd gear, and returned around 20mpg with the van behind. At nearly a tonne heavier, it was slightly more stable in crosswinds, but not enough to tempt me back. Mondeo highly recommended. With or without the caravan on the hook, it is an excellent drive - torquey and quick.
as a first time tower, the car made it seem easy and i would be confident to tow the van anywhere
Have borrowed one of these a couple of times and been very happy with their performance. Fuel economy was good, even with the auto. Not as easy to tow as our normal car( VW TOURAN) but that's due to it not having traction control and being an auto.
130 horse mondeo has no problem with swift van , a pleasure to pull with all round adequate performance and reasonable economy ,good value as well.
Last year (2006) 2000 miles in France towing a Hymer 390, This year (2007) same miles with a Swift Challenger 480 with my Mondeo Ghia 2ltr Diesel 130 bhp, car could not have performed better. However makers 75kg noseweight limit caused a headache to get it right.
Best tow car we have ever had, dont know the van is on the back,a pleasure to tow with.
excellent towcar much better than my previous 1.8td was a more relaxing journey, great
hill starts were a bit of a problem with my focus diesel fully loaded including 4 bikes on roof not now I changed to the Mondeo 130BHP I have to watch out for the speed cameras excellent choice and better MPG
Well what can i say, stick it in 6th and it will go anywhere. The pulling power and torque are unbelievable. It can be a tad bouncy buts that doiwn to it being the ST model with firm suspension.10/10
We own the Ford Mondeo 130 TDCI Estate with 6 forward gears ,and we also own a 2.7 Nissan Terrano ,the Mondeo leaves the Nissan standing when our Senator Indiana is hitched , the Terrano is quite sluggish when driven solo ,hitch 1.5 tons on the back and you can see its going to be no flyer ,so we normally use the Mondeo all summer and the terrano in the winter ,another good thing about the Mondeo is the fuel economy ,i have to drive along the M4 on mondays and keeping the car in 6th gear as much as possible and doing about 60 mph i can get 64 mpg over a distance of a 130 miles driving solo ,so if you want plenty of towing performance and a good solo drive the Mondeo is for You
Actually my Abbey is a Vogue 417 GTS (1998) with a MPTLM of 1300 kgs,so I selected a 217 from your lists to simulate the same towing characteristics. The Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Estate is the best towcar I have had for every aspect of towing, and that includes three 4x4's
been towing this outfit for 2 years now and not yet encountered a problem. most towing in wales . very hilly, but get along very nicely. seen same model towing much bigger vans , but we prefer to stick within limits.
Very pleased with this set up. Comfortable car, pulls well, around 30 mpg. Important to keep to the recomended nose weight. Best buy was a TomTom.
Brilliant engine. very flexible. Solo it holds road well and pulls from as low as 1500 revs. rarely need to exceed 2500 revs, which ain 6th. is over 60mph. tows effortlessly Seems stable probably due to the firm suspension, and on motorway hills very rarely needs below 5th gear. Too early to arrive at fuel consumption towing but solo is around 40 mpg around home and 50 on long motorway trips.
As usual mondeos are excellent tow cars my 2.O litre TDCI tows my ABI brightstar without knowing its on the back excellent.
very good compination between car and caravan. No problems on freeways or in mountain. Mondeo is stabil for towing
My caravan is a Swift Charisma 550 and my Mondeo 2.0 Ghia Auto does struggle. ( so much so I am looking to change it ). It is ok on the flat but on long hills it finds it hard to cope and I have noticed a burning smell from the transmission unit. It does not pick up enough to enable you to overtake with confidence on a motorway.
This car has fantastic pulling power, but I think at around 57-58mph 5th gear is no good as the engine is idling, I always stay in 4th and achieve 32-35 mpg constantly whilst towing and around 50 mpg when solo.
Caravan sits really well on the roads and is easy to manouvre for such a hefty van.
This car and caravan match is ideal. I have been to Belgium France and Holland covering many miles of motorway, and the car has performed its duty with ease. There is no worry about the power when pulling out of junctions. The car sticks to the road when cornering. I could go on and on but I won't, All I will say is the 130bhp mondeo is a joy to tow with.
I HAVE HAD 4 DEISELS THIS IS BRILL FOR TOWING THE SUSPENSION DOES NOT NEED ASSISTERS BRILLIANT MPG
I have only recently purchased this caravan but it seems to pull the caravan with no effort. The Mondeo is a much better towcar than my previous Galaxy 2.3 petrol
its a verry god car and it can do it and i dont have any problem at all henrik jensen denmark
I have towed a fully laden Coachman Amara 520/4 for the past year and the performance has been fantastic, with more than enough grunt to make for a relaxed journey. Fuel economy drops to approx 36mpg from 45/7 normally.
car 2.2 tdci mondeo caravan abbey freestyle 520l tows great fuel consumpstion 42mpg over 142mile journey head wind same journey 37mpg
Drives great and pulls caravan well on straight and up hill
Hi we tow a coachman genius 1994 , mtplm 1200kgs and have found very good towing performance's between the ford mondeo 2001 model TDDI 115bhp , hill climbing is very good and stable , in reasonable high winds (with the aid of a stabiliser ) is also very good balenced outfit , top speeds on motorways of 60mph are very easily reached and stable at those speeds , i would rate this mondeo a good match , especially at these weights.
Very pleased with our Ford Mondeo diesel car towing and Ace Jubilee Envoy caravan. A nice smooth ride with plenty of power.
I have towed our new Vendee with the Ford over about 2000 miles this year with no problems at all. It has good economy with ample power for hill starts etc in Cornwall and no problems with snaking on motorways the handling is excellent
